Sports Results - Week Beginning 7th February
Netball
Our netball teams have had a really strong come back after leagues being cancelled last year due to Covid. We were promoted from the year before up into either Div 1 or Div 2 of the Kings Norton District league, which means we are playing some very high level netball, against some teams with multiple academy level players.
Even though we haven’t won as many matches as we would have liked, it has been a great year for rising to the challenge of this higher level netball and even in some of the loses, there were some real highlights of fantastic play.
This season has encouraged many of our girls who do not already play for teams outside of school to join one, which is exactly what it is all about – a life long love of sport and with the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 right around the corner, a great time to really understand and get into such a fantastic women’s sport.
Some of our most notable games were:
Year 7 v Swanshurst Lost 2-4
Year 8 vs Selly Park Girls Won 4-2
Year 8 vs Hillcrest Won 9-5
Senior B Team vs Selly Park Girls Won 11-0
Senior B vs Ark Kings Academy Won 10-1
Senior A vs King Edwards Five Ways Lost 9-11
Basketball
GirlsWe enter two girls teams into the Birmingham Basketball League a year 9 and year 11 team.
We are yet to play our year 11 fixtures night, however we have played our year 9 fixtures and we are pleased to report our girls are undefeated. A fantastic show of quality basketball from our girls with incredible shooting by our top scorer Krystal O. We are hoping our year 11’s will follow suit next week.
To top this off, we also have one of our year 11 girls Eva J, who is on the pathway to play in the England women’s basketball team. She has now taken on the role of referee for our year 9 school games with high praise from other schools (and ourselves). A true inspiration to our younger students.
Boys
Our year 11 boys basketball team began their league campaign in January with a strong victory over King Edwards Camp Hill! The boys were led by our sixth form coaching team of Statham, Jensen and Tio. It is great to see the school community coming together across year groups to achieve success together within sport!
Our year 9 boys basketball team attended the Birmingham School Games Level 2 round at Colmers and were undefeated, leading them to the Level 3 finals – unfortunately, the finals have been postponed due to Covid earlier this term. Even though the boys won every game easily, they were gracious in their victory and supported and encouraged the others teams throughout – real Tommies spirit.
Trampolining
One of our sixth form A-Level PE students has recently qualified for the BGSA Trampolining finals in March, after two fantastic rounds, getting first place, we wish him lots of luck. Good luck Reece C!
Skiing
Our brother and sister skiing combo are once again off to Austria for two weeks of skiing and a week of competing over half term. Adam’s most recent accomplishments placed him as the fastest GB u14 boys and top 5 overall in an international competition at Christmas, he is in the running to be in the official GB children’s ski team which his sister Emilia is also under selection for. Emilia had an unfortunate 2020 and battled with injury, but worked solidly through 2021 and the lockdowns and has returned with a renewed vigour and determination. With the winter Olympics currently on the TV, it is a possibility that in 4 years time, we could be looking out for them both on the slopes!
Fitness Club
It has been fantastic to see how well populated fitness club has been on a regular basis so far this school year! Regular numbers of 30-40 students have been regularly attending fitness club every Tuesday and Friday. It is inspirational to see how many students value the role of physical activity within their lives and the important impact it will have on their health throughout their lives!
Football
Boys
Lastly, all of our boy’s football teams have made successful starts to their seasons, picking up some good victories within their matches. We hope to maintain this success when fixtures recommence after half-term and win league titles across multiple year groups.
Dance
Dance club is a long standing tradition at STACS, with Kerrey the dance teacher from Adage Dance Studios leading our troops through successful performances and competitions over the years.
Due to covid these performances have stopped over the past year however, it was great to see numbers increasing this past half term, which is offered on a Wednesday after school. It was also great to see more of the boys getting themselves to dance club and joining in with the girls who already attend regularly.
