Policing, Criminology and Law at Birmingham Newman University

Year 12 Criminology students enjoyed an inspiring and engaging to Birmingham Newman University today, gaining valuable insight into policing, criminology and the legal system.

During the morning session, students stepped into the role of police officers as they investigated a fictitious case involving cuckooing and county lines. After examining a mock crime scene, they analysed evidence for signs of drug supply and multiple occupancy, before applying criminological theories to explore why individuals become involved in criminality and which vulnerabilities offenders often exploit.

In the afternoon, the case moved into the courtroom. Students became prosecution and defence lawyers, considering the evidence, before reaching a verdict on the defendant’s alleged drug offences. The majority concluded that the defendant was not guilty, based on the evidence.

To finish off the day, students toured the university campus, exploring facilities including the sports centre, library, computing suites, nursing areas and a range of other course areas.
