Criminology - Real World Insights into Crime and Justice

This week, our Criminology students have been bringing their classroom learning to life through two exciting and insightful experiences. 

On Tuesday, students welcomed two officers from West Midlands Police's Operation Skybridge team, a specialist unit focused on preventing and investigating serious and acquisitive crimes (SAC) such as burglary, robbery, vehicle and drug offences. Officers Sgt Danny Fulford, a former Tommies student, and PC Sam Wilkes, provided a fascinating look into how they investigate crimes, gather evidence and charge suspects. Students were then able to apply their learning to a realistic scenario before engaging in a Q&A session, where students explored some of the tools used in police work. 

The learning continued on Wednesday with a visit to Birmingham Magistrates’ and Crown Courts, where students observed pre-trial matters, live trials and sentencing decisions, including cases involving dangerous driving, possession of a firearm, burglary and murder. These court observations will deepen student’s understanding of the criminal justice process from investigation through to the court room. 

A huge thank you to Sgt Fulford and PC Wilkes for their time and expertise, and to Mrs Fougler and Mrs Cranage for supporting the court visit. It's been a great week of hands-on learning for the Criminology students.
