Athletics – South Birmingham Schools Cup
We took a strong team of 41 students to Abbey Stadium on Tuesday to compete against all the other secondary schools in South Birmingham for the illustrious South Birmingham Cup. We have won this cup several times in the past, but it is a hard-fought trophy and not easily won, however with a very strong team, we felt confident of a good placing.
Each year group is allowed one male and one female competitor in each of the following events, and they compete directly against those from other schools, so results are instant, therefore we had a feel as to how we were getting on from the start. The track events were: 100m, 200m, 300m (400m for year 10 boys), 800m and 4 x 100m relay. The field events were: long jump, shot, javelin, discus. In the track events we had some amazing first places from: year 7 Amy T 200m, Erin 300m and Caitlin 100m, year 8 Ariana 300m, year 9 Benedict 100m and 200m and the girls 4 x 100m relay. In the field events we had year 8 Maizie javelin, year 8 Cian javelin and long jump, Year 9 Elisha shot, Year 10 Leo shot.
Overall, it was very close on points and we ended up coming 2nd to a very strong King Edwards Five Ways team who pipped us in all but one of the relays to secure first place! We were thrilled with our 2nd place and the students did us very proud. If they are not already in Athletics clubs, they definitely should be, and I have signposted some local teams underneath who would be very interested in trialling them all. A huge thank you to PE staff who went with them and ended up staying much later than anticipated due to it running over (and Mr Greatrex for missing his own preseason training to stay and support!), without them, these things would not be possible.
Well done team!
