Careers - Provider Access Policy

The following is a policy statement that sets out the school’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to students at the school for the purposes of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.

Student entitlement

Students in Years 8 to 13 are entitled:
• To find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme that provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point.
• To hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships, through options evenings, assemblies and group discussions and taster events.
• To understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

Management of provider access requests

A provider wishing to request access should contact Emma Bentley, Careers Lead, on 0121 464 4643 or via email e.bentley@stacs.bham.sch.uk

Premises and facilities

The school will make the main hall or sports hall, classrooms or meeting rooms available for discussions between the provider and students, as appropriate to the activity. The school will also make available AV and other specialist equipment to support provider presentations. This will all be discussed and agreed in advance of the visit with the Careers Lead.

Providers are welcome to leave a copy of their prospectus or other relevant course literature at Reception and this information will be displayed in the careers section of the LRC and in the careers section of the sixth form library. The LRC is available before school, lunchtimes and after school. The sixth form library is available to sixth formers throughout the school day.

Opportunities for access

A number of events, integrated into the school careers programme, will potentially offer providers an opportunity to come into school to speak to students and/or their parents/carers.

The school calendar varies from year to year so providers need to contact the member of staff named above to identify the most suitable opportunity. The events are usually arranged well in advance, so it is essential that providers contact us early in the academic year to be involved in our planning.

Examples of events and activities are:
• Employer speed dating.
• Inspirational careers talks.
• Apprenticeship presentations.
• University presentations.
• Further education college presentations.
• Attending parent/open evenings.
• National Careers Week.
• Curriculum support.
• Supporting careers and enrichment days.
• Mentoring and development opportunities.

Providers will be expected to meet the school’s safeguarding requirements. Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its students. Attendance at school events is on the understanding that you agree to abide by our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and our No Platform Policy, as available on the school website.
