Road Safety Campaign

Did you know that traffic is the biggest single cause of accidental death for 12-16 year old?

We are running a road safety campaign this year in order to further raise awareness amongst our young people of the hazards involved in road use.

The campaign is also in response to an incident that occurred in June of this year, where a boy, then in Year 7, was knocked down outside school.

We feel that we needed to raise awareness of the dangers of road use amongst pupils of all ages but we are aware that the needs of the different age groups of pupils will be different.

We also recognise that we need to work in partnership with parents to reinforce good road sense learnt at home and at primary school.

PC Caroline Reilly, from Billesley Police Station, has also worked with us and came into school to address Years 7 and 8 as to the dangers of careless road use and to describe the sorts of road incidents that police are called to attend.

In the Spring Term, we will be working with the West Midlands Fire Service to further embed the message of good road use with our more senior pupils with a series of assemblies and workshops.

We hope to work in a similar way with the Sixth Form in the Summer Term and to provide an evening workshop session for parents.  Further details of this will be announced through the Friday Letter.

Road Safety Advice for Parents of 11-16 Year Olds

This advice is taken from the “Think Road Safety” website.

Young people aged between 11 and 16 are more at risk of being killed or seriously injured as a pedestrian or cyclist in road accidents than any other age group.

As a parent, you can help them to think for themselves.

As a parent, you can reinforce road safety messages.

  • Keep talking about the dangers of traffic
  • Point out people who are endangering themselves with poor road sense
  • Stress the need to concentrate and pay attention to the road
  • One in ten teenagers involved in accidents say they were not looking or paying attention
  • Warm your child of the dangers of distractions such a MP3 players, phone calls and text messaging
  • Get your child to practice judging the speed of oncoming vehicles and therefore judge safe gaps for crossing roads
  • Stress that they MUST judge for themselves when it is safe to cross and not just follow others.
