As far as we are concerned, the sky is the limit for every pupil.
We are passionately committed to extending everyone in the school community to the maximum of his or her potential, and that goes for adults as well as pupils. In recent years, the examination results of St Thomas Aquinas have shown a marked improvement in GCSE, A Levels and in vocational qualifications too. We are determined to ensure that trend continues and, in line with the philosophy of Birmingham Local Education Authority, we are committed to improving on our previous best.
Homework
Homework is an essential requirement for all pupils and students in the school in virtually every subject. The amount set will vary according to the age and ability of the pupil, as well as the requirements of particular subjects. All homework set must be recorded in the pupil’s planner, which is signed regularly by the form tutor and countersigned by parents.
Special Needs Educational Needs and Inclusion
The school places great emphasis on the importance of meeting the needs of all pupils. We have many pupils who are gifted or talented either in particular areas or in general terms. We have a named member of staff with specific responsibility for meeting the needs of the gifted and talented. Similarly, we have many pupils who have a range of learning difficulties and are at various stages on the Code of Practice. Pupils with learning difficulties are taught in small group situations and their work is closely monitored by a specific team of teachers under the direction of a senior member of staff who has responsibility for Special Educational Needs and Inclusion.
Sixth Form (Ages 16-19)
Most of our Year 11 students return to us after the GCSE examinations to join the Sixth Form. Depending on their results and their future ambitions, they follow a wide variety of courses. There are well over 20 AS and A2 courses on offer as well as a broad range of vocational courses at both intermediate and advanced level. All students in the Sixth Form follow a general Religious Education programme as well as a course in Citizenship. Studies.
