Open Evening 2008 was a fantastic occasion. St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School opened its doors to the community and showed just what a great school it is. This opinion was shared by the many parents and children that joined us. A look at the evaluations below show this to be the common consensus.
The evening began for many with an unbelievable presentation in the Sports Hall. The choir sang first, followed by a lovely solo performance. The singing was of the highest quality and it showed off just what talent we have in the school. It was, however, the dancers who stole the show. Dancers from all year groups in the school combined to produce an amazing dance based on the theme of the Battle of Troy. The dance was part choreographed by our GCSE students and this made it all the more special for the watching audience.
Following the performance, the headteacher, Jim Foley spoke to the audience about the essential question for all parents – ‘will my child be happy in this school?’ and went on to outline what St Thomas Aquinas has to offer. After this parents were then able to see the wide variety of opportunities in store for their children should they come to Aquinas.
Leaving the hall the parents were greeted by our guides to give them a tour around the school. As ever, the students were fantastic ambassadors for our school and were universally praised. The students spent upwards of an hour with families taking them to all four corners of the school answering any questions they were asked.
The activities going on around the school were superb, giving the prospective pupils a real sense of the exciting times that would be in store for them at St Thomas Aquinas. There were chocolate fountains, quizzes, laser cut personalised key-rings, maths games and the ever popular pop corn – if only you could design a box to put it in! Each department put on a show of their best work but special mention must go to Ann Boleyn and Henry VIII (aka Mrs Lavelle and Mr Gaunt) in the history department who wowed the crowds with their period costumes and witty banter.
It really was an occasion for the school to be proud of but, even more importantly, it was a chance for the children in Years 5 and 6 to get a sense of just what our school can offer them. Every person leaving the school could be left in no doubt that at St Thomas Aquinas we certainly do ‘live, love and learn together’.
