The Curriculum
Students in Year 8 follow a structured scheme of work based on the Key Stage 3 Framework for Teaching Mathematics. The yearly teaching programme is organised into four strands, linked to the National Curriculum programmes of study. These four strands are organised into 21 topics; Algebra 1 – 5b, Number 1 – 4, Shape and Space 1 – 4b, Handling Data 1 – 3 and Solving Problems 1-2. These topics are then shared between the 6 half terms of the year. During the last week of each half term, all students sit a short assessment in order to monitor their progress. The results of these assessments will be used at the end of the year to inform setting for year 9.
Setting
At the start of Year 8 students will be set by ability across the year group according to the data we have collected from their year 7 mathematics assessments. They will be placed in a set numbered from 1 to 8 with set 1 being the most able students.
Homework
Students in year 8 should expect to receive at least one piece of homework per week and often two, particularly in the higher sets.
Additional Resources
Support work for most of the 21 topics can be found on the mymaths website at http://www.mymaths.co.uk/ . The username and password for access to the website can be found on posters throughout the school.
