Year 7 Mathematics at St Thomas Aquinas

The Curriculum

Students in Year 7 follow a structured scheme of work based on the Key Stage 3 Framework for Teaching Mathematics. The yearly teaching programme is organised into four strands, linked to the National Curriculum programmes of study. These four strands are organised into 20 topics; Algebra 1 – 5b, Number 1 – 5b, Shape and Space 1 – 5, and Handling Data 1 – 3. These topics are then shared between the 6 half terms of the year. During the last week of each half term, all students sit a short assessment in order to monitor their progress. The results of these assessments will be used at the end of the year to inform setting for year 8.

Setting

For the first half term of year 7 students will be taught within their form groups whilst data is collected in order to inform setting. At the end of the half term students will be set according to ability within their half of the year group. The sets are as follows: 7A1, 7A2, 7A3, 7A4 and 7A5 for the A population of the year group, and 7B1, 7B2, 7B3 and 7B4 for the B population. All students cover the same scheme of work although the difficulty of the work they actually do depends upon their own capabilities.

Homework

Students in year 7 should expect to receive at least one piece of homework per week and often two, particularly in the higher sets.

Additional Resources

Support work for each of the 20 topics can be found on the mymaths website at http://www.mymaths.co.uk/ . The username and password for access to the website can be found on posters throughout the school.
