Visit to Central Library, 18/3/08
Did you know that half the population of Birmingham are members of our Public Libraries? And that Central Library is the busiest Public Library in the UK? I learnt this and lots more when Ms Clark and I took a group of yr7 readers to visit the Centre for the Child and the Central Library this week. The tour took our 11 pupils to all 6 floors of this massive building and we were able to see its large collections of DVDs, CDs of music of all genres, the science and health library where many 3D anatomical models can be handled. The Local History collection was also fascinating, with hundreds and thousands of maps and books and other artefacts all showing the growth and development of Birmingham and the surrounding area. There were lots of people doing genealogical research there too, using microfilm of old newspapers to find information about their family history. Anybody who has been there will know that you use escalators to get from floor to floor. A bit different from the ARC! We finished our visit with a premiere viewing of some of the CFC’s latest pop-up books, my favourite being “Star Wars” complete with pop-up light-sabres!
Thanks from everyone on the visit goes to Janet Brisland, manager of the CFC, whose enthusiasm, knowledge and warm welcome made for a very enjoyable afternoon.
