Alton Castle Retreat 8-10 May 2019

Last week, 47 of our Year 8 students set off on three action-packed days to Alton Castle, Staffordshire.

We departed on a drizzly Wednesday morning and on arrival, we were sent to do some abseiling.  Students overcame their fear of heights to climb up to the top of the castle and abseil down.

Three wonderful members of staff – Mr Miastowski, Mr Saunderson and Mrs Crozier gave up their time to accompany the children and partake in the outdoor pursuits, as well as supporting them in their spiritual activities.  The rain didn’t dampen the spirits and we were proud of our students, especially the way they treated the other students from St Thomas More, Willenhall.

Here are comments from many of our Year 8 students.

‘Survival was my favourite as I learnt how to make a fire!’

‘I loved the crate stacking because I overcame my fears!’

‘The beds were really comfy!’

‘Our group was the best.  We got really competitive during archery.’

‘I liked the abseiling because it was fun.’

‘The activities were much better than I thought they’d be.’

‘I really liked Keira (the young Alton leader) as she was really bubbly and happy and reminded me of me’

‘I really enjoyed meeting the other school.’

‘I enjoyed the assault course on the first day.’

‘I loved the small groups as it was a time to relax.’

‘I loved the dorms.’

‘I did the mountain bike ride twice as I loved it so much.’

The music at the Mass was my highlight.’

‘I did different activities from when I came in Year 6.’

‘Crate stacking was my favourite as I liked hanging from the top – also the evening music quiz was fun.’

‘I enjoyed chilling out in my free time.’

‘I loved the bike riding because I’m athletic.’

Thank you, Year 8 – we were proud of you and I hope we will get our year 7s to start thinking about their trip next year.
