U12 Football - Birmingham Cup Final

St Peters 3, STACS 2 (Clifford, Oates)
The Year 7 boys football team had the privilege of representing the school in the prestigious Birmingham Cup Final, held at Wast Hills - the training ground of Birmingham City FC. They certainly brought an energy and excitement to the occasion and were inspired by a pre-season team talk over the phone from Mr Greatrex, their regular team manager who was stuck up a hill on the Arete trip!

St Peters certainly started the stronger team and had an early goal ruled out for offside before taking the lead. That seemed to wake up STACS who were soon awarded the chance to equalise from the penalty spot after Louie Clifford was brought down. Clifford took the penalty himself, which was saved, but then bundled in from the rebound! By the end of the first half, it was one-way traffic and STACS took the lead soon before half time when Jamie Oates finished well from close range following a set piece that wasn’t cleared.
Half time: St Peters 1, STACS 2

Early in the second half, STACS looked to extend their lead but hit the bar and then the post as chances went begging. St Peters were offering a threat at the other end meanwhile, and only a fantastic save from keeper Cole-Barwell from a fiercely struck shot from distance kept STACS level. He couldn’t do anything to stop them equalising however, and at 2-2 with 15 minutes left it was all to play for! As St Peters gained new hope and momentum, they finished stronger and their pressure told as STACS suffered a cruel twist of luck when a hard struck cross from the left ricocheted off Odogun and into the net. It was too late for STACS to hit back again and despite their efforts a thoroughly entertaining game ended 3-2 to St Peters who eventually ran out deserved winners.

The boys were an absolute pleasure to work with and their enthusiasm, persistence and commitment to the team were a credit to themselves, Mr Greatrex and the school. They conducted themselves superbly throughout and should be commended on their efforts. Well done boys, so close and hopefully we go one step further next year!
