St John Henry Newman Feast Day

On Tuesday morning, students and staff of Newman House gathered in the main hall for a form time service of celebration for St John Henry Newman’s Feast Day. The readers were eloquent and clear, and Mr Smith led the singing, something Newman House used to excel at.

Mr Martin spoke at the end, reminding students of St John Henry Newman’s belief that “Heart speaks unto heart” (the words at the bottom of the house banner), and how Newman House lives the Saint’s wishes through their habits of the heart and mind. He reflected on the Gospel from St Luke, the story Martha and Mary, who both lived busy lives:

"Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

Mr Martin reminded the students of the power and importance of daily prayer.

Mrs Bayliss thanked all the students for the exceptional demeanour throughout the service, and thanked the students’ form tutors Miss Walters, Miss Hawes, Mrs Beasley, Mr O’Sullivan, Miss Brooks, Ms Tipper, and Mrs Eden.
