Year 10 'Aim Higher' Trip to Newman University

On Wednesday 16th May I had the pleasure, along with our Aim Higher Ambassador Mr Lewis Hickman, of accompanying 25 Year 9 students to Newman University in Bartley Green. The purpose of the visit was to raise the students' aspirations about the possibility of going to university in the future and to give them a flavour of what it is like to be a university student in the 21st Century.

On arrival the students had a session all about the different courses which can be studied at university as well as the financial implications - not as scary as the media portrays! The session also included information about different study options and the pros and cons of living at home whilst studying at a local university. After an interesting campus tour, the students enjoyed lunch in the university canteen - lovely and lots of choice. The campus tour finished with a look at the new onsite accommodation.

To end the day, two students from Newman University gave a talk about student life and then, in groups of five, the Year 9s completed a challenge called 'Design your own university course'. This gave the students the chance to show what they had learnt throughout the day and resulted in courses about Gaming, Greek Mythology and even Exotic Foods! All of the students were great ambassadors for our school and are now looking forward to going to a university in the future.

Thanks to Mr Hickman for organising the day and to Aim Higher West Midlands for the opportunity.
