Year 10 District Cup Final Report

STACS 3-1 Bartley Green
Goals: Nico Gordon (2); Nathaniel Henry
Man of the Match: Brendan Evans

It was a scorcher of an afternoon at the Triplex Ground for the district cup final. We went into the game already having won the Birmingham Cup, but in fact the game was much more difficult than the last final due to the conditions and the quality of the opposition. We weren’t quite at it in truth; pressing was much slower and the ball didn’t stick like it normally does, but hard work and determination got us over the line.

We started the game slowly and conceded a couple of chances to Bartley. Towards the end of the first half we started to come into the game a little bit more. At half time we discussed that we needed to use the space much better, press the ball more and be quicker in possession. Whilst this did happen for a short while, the heat really did tire our boys, and the intensity was just short of what we would normally play at.

Despite this we took the lead thanks to a wonderful individual goal by Nico Gordon, showing pace and drive towards the box before coolly finishing past the Bartley ‘keeper. Unfortunately for us, we conceded a penalty soon after and Bartley equalised to make it 1-1. The game was then full of chances and could have gone either way.  Bartley missed a one and one and this seemed to be the catalyst for improvement. Within a couple of minutes STACS played the ball forward. Nathaniel Henry got the ball into the box and the ‘keeper made his first and only mistake of the game. It trickled in and STACS were leading. With only a few minutes left Bartley had to go for it, and we were then able to hit them on the break, Nico Gordon again showing composure to put the ball away to make it 3-1. This was the last kick of the game.

In what has been an incredible season, we finish with 2 trophies. Just one defeat all season! I am immensely proud of each and every one of the squad. This is my 4th year with the boys now and the team spirit that they have is unbreakable.

Well done, lads! Enjoy the off season and let’s go again next year!
