Sports Results - Week Beginning 3 April

Unihok House Competition

This week, house Unihok competitions took place in the sports hall for years 7 to 11. Participants were treated to quite an atmosphere, created by all the spectators cheering on their house, and responded with some fine technical and tactical displays. A particular highlight was the Year 7 competition, which had the most participants on show of any year group. In the second sports competition of the year, there was a wide range of houses in top 3 finishes, but Mrs McCabe will probably be the most pleased with the performance of Martin House across the 5 year groups! Special thanks must go to all the 6th form officials and a huge well done to all participants, who applied and conducted themselves superbly over the week.

Under 15 Aston Villa Cup Final

Lode Heath 1-4 St Thomas Aquinas

STACS started the game on the front foot and had much of the ball in the early minutes. Lode Heath were resolute in their defending however and difficult to break down. STACS were limited to shots from well outside the box. Just past the fifteen minute mark, STACS created their first real opportunity of the game: Ryan Makuzva 1 on 1 with the keeper, with the keeper making a good save. Luckily for STACS, the miss did not mean much for long, as captain Nico Gordon glided through the defence and beat the keeper at his near post. A well deserved goal for both the player and the team.

STACS continued to dominate the ball, with some intricate play but again couldn’t create any meaningful chances. Again, STACS had a few shots from outside the area and did force a good save from the goalkeeper but could not break them down. This was until just before half time when Nico Gordon went 1 on 1 with the keeper and this time the keeper had no chance of saving the powerful effort placed to the bottom left corner. 2-0 at half time.

After the restart it was much of the same, STACS however sitting back just a little to stop any counter attacking football from Lode Heath. This allowed Lode Heath to have a little more of the ball and they created a few half chances. Following the spell of play, STACS upped their game again, and scored a 3rd goal: an incredible effort. Nathaniel Henry took the ball on the halfway line, slipped through a few challenges before unleashing an incredible effort into the top left corner of the goal: a great goal from an incredibly hardworking player.

Lode Heath seemed to up their game in response, and created a great opening and were rewarded for their consistent hard work with a wonderful finish. 3-1.
As the game seemed to be in the balance, STACS needed another, and got in, by scoring another wonder goal, this time from deep-lying playmaker Harrison Burley who scored a well placed shot into the top left corner. 4-1.

This score line proved too much for Lode Heath, and STACS were able to retain the ball and create further chances but couldn’t add to the score.
A special mention should go to the defence; Max Cornbill, Brendan Evans, Ed Lane and Gashaun Johnson, who defended brilliant and started every attack that we did today.

All in all, a great team performance!

Squad: Aidan, Max, Brendan, Ed, Gashaun, Trev, Nathaniel, Harrison, Nathaniel, Ryan, Nico.
Subs: Jayden, Liam, Nabil, Amandeep

Year 7 Football - League Champions and Cup Finalists

STACS 3-2 Turves Green Boys (Double Header; League and Cup Semi-Final)

STACS claimed two prizes on Tuesday 4th April. By beating Turves Green (TGB) they are in the final of the district cup, to be played in May, and have won the league this season. In what was a poor performance in comparison to previous games, Tommies showed enough strength to battle through to a hard fought victory.

TGB took the lead early on in the game, following a dominating performance with the ball. Their goal came from the corner following a STACS error. Despite hardly having any of the ball, within 30 seconds of the restart we equalised. A brilliantly taken goal from Jack Bradley. TGB continued to control possession but were restricted to long range efforts. Any work from Tommies was on the counter attack. These counters paid dividends towards the very end of the half when Jack Bradley again unleashed an effort on goal and scored. 2-1 at the break.

At half time the lads spoke about how poor they were, and agreed that they needed to improve in the second half. We started the second half strongly and our fast breaking tactics became worthwhile when Sheikh Mbowe scored a well taken goal to make it 3-1. TGB did not stop and continued knocking on the door and got a goal back with 8 minutes to go. In the end, 8 minutes were a few too many for TGB and STACS stumbled over the line to the final and to claim the league title for this year. Well done STACS - onto the final now!
