Transition Summer Camp – July 2014

This July, as part of our ever-growing transition programme, we were able to offer our new Year 7 students a fantastic week of activities including team building projects, IT and art as well as tons of exciting sports and competitions.

Over 100 students took part in the ‘Transition Summer Camp’ which culminated in a trip to The Factory Youth Centre, Longbridge for a carousel of youth service taster sessions. The week was specifically devised to offer our new-starters the chance to get to know staff and the school site, to make friends and get over any nerves or worries before September.

100% of parents whose children took part felt that the scheme had helped with their child’s transition, and that it boosted their confidence and overall happiness about the move to secondary school.  84% of students who attended felt the camp was ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ and 72% said it had made them feel more confident about starting in September (22% already felt confident before the scheme).

John Paul McInerney, Assistant Headteacher commented:

“The transition camp has been hugely beneficial to our new Year 7s.  They have arrived full of confidence, with lots of new friends and ready to learn.  Teachers too already know their names, skills and talents and really personalise learning.

“Working with our community partners from The Factory Young People’s Centre in Longbridge, we have also been able to ensure students are aware of the resources available to them outside of school and they are encouraged to take part in many positive activities both in school and the local area.”
