Monday Letter - Issue 38

DEAR PARENTS

A PRAYER FROM THE YEAR OF FAITH

This is our faith.  This is the faith of the Church.  We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Amen.

A PRAYER FOR THE END OF OUR SCHOOL YEAR

Almighty God , as we come to the end of our school year we thank you for all the blessings we have received and we ask for forgiveness for our faults and failings.  We give thanks to you for all who are leaving our school.  Guard them and guide them in the future.  May we all enjoy a well earned rest safe in your loving care.  Amen

MASS ON WEDNESDAY EVENING

A final reminder to parents following the invitation you received from Anne Vile, Chair of the Parents Forum and the message on the website.  The Mass on Wednesday is my last opportunity to thank as many parents as possible for the fantastic support you have given me over the past 21 years.  It begins at 7.00pm and it would be wonderful to see you there.

FINAL MASS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR ON FRIDAY

On Friday morning we will be finishing our school year in the perfect way with a celebration of Mass for the whole school.  We will reflect on all the blessings of the past year and look forward to our well earned rest.  After break we will gather once again for our traditional Sports Awards Assembly and, if all goes well, students will leave school at 12.30pm.

RETREAT DAY TODAY

Today has been an opportunity for students to reflect on the past year and on themselves as people.  I am sure it will have been a really good day both spiritually and socially.  Thank you, as always, to Mr Smith, Anne-Marie and everyone involved in making it possible.

B30 FOOD BANK - THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY

Do check out the website www.stacs.org for more details but a huge thank you to everyone who responded so generously to the appeal for UHT Milk for the Food Bank.  We collected the astonishing total of 530 litres and I know staff at the Food Bank were just amazed by the scale of the donation.  Particular thanks to Romero House who proved once again that they are unsurpassed when it comes to charities.  They collected 175 litres as a house.  Well done everyone.

TARGET REVIEW DAY ON FRIDAY

Thank you to everyone who supported our Target Review Day on Friday.  The evaluations of the day were extremely positive and it was clear from the general buzz that it was very successful.  Of course for the students it was a compulsory day but special thanks to all our parents who came along as well.  We had an attendance of 61% which on a normal working day is very pleasing.  Thank you

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - WHAT  A SHOW!

A little while has lapsed since the show but in my last letter I reported that I was looking forward to seeing it.  Little did I imagine what an incredible evening we were in for.  I throughourly enjoyed Bugsy the year before but I have to say that this year's show was on another level.  From beginning to end we were enthralled by the acting, the singing, the music but above all by the incredible confidence of the cast which ranged in age from Year 7 to Year 10.  Well done to every single one of them and also to the many people who supported behind the scenes.  Special thanks, however, to the key staff who made it all possible.  Miss Mortimer has made an incredible impression in a very short time on numerous students and Drama has never been more popular at St Thomas Aquinas.  Now we know why!  And of course a huge thank you and congratulations to Mrs Johnson as Head of Performing Arts who, once again, achieved the remarkable.  Long may it continue.

READING VOLUNTEERS - MORE PARENTS WANTED.  APPEAL FROM MRS MERRICK

Thank you to those who have responded so far, but we need more!  Just one hour of your time each week will give two year 7 or 8 students  the chance of improving their reading skills.   It's enjoyable and rewarding and we can't wait to hear from you.  Contact Mrs Merrick or Ms Clark in the ARC on 464 4643.

SPORTS DAY TOMORROW

There is great excitement in school as we prepare for the great annual event that is Sports Day.  Do look out for the final results later this week.

AN IMPORTANT APPOINTMENT

I am delighted to inform you that following interviews last week the Governors have appointed Mr Richard Smith as our permanent Deputy Headteacher with effect from September.  We congratulate Mr Smith on his appointment and wish him every success and happiness in the future.

THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK TO THREE LOYAL SERVANTS

In the last Friday Letter I reported on the wonderful Family Mass we had to celebrate the long service of three staff who retire from St Thomas Aquinas this week.  Mrs Helen Price has been with us for 16 years as a teacher of French; Mrs Marie Carroll has been in the school for the past 22 years in the Science Faculty; and Mr Ian Gaunt has been with us more than half his life having joined as a student for 7 years and subsequently for a further 29 years as a teacher of History.  We thank Helen, Marie and Ian for their long and outstanding service to our school and we wish them all a long and happy retirement.

THANK YOU TO MR HATHAWAY

Thank you to Mr Lee Hathaway who has ably supported us in a variety of roles for the past two years and is now moving on to a permanent post elsewhere.  We wish him every success and happiness in the future.

LAST QUIZ QUESTION

Congratulations to John Hardy from Year 8 (Romero House 5C ) who correctly informed me that the Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion 2014 is Novak Djokovic.  Well done to John who wins £10.

THIS WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

As this is my final quiz question as Headteacher of St Thomas Aquinas and overcome in a moment of weakness by emotion and generosity this week's winner will receive £25.  The prize will go to the student who is the nearest in guessing how many Friday Letters (including Monday and other day Letters!)  I have issued over the past 21 years.  Please note that the winner will be announced on the website on Friday.  Email me on j.foley@stacs.bham.sch.uk and don't forget to tell me who you are.

Yours sincerely

JIM FOLEY
