Friday Letter - Issue 37

DEAR PARENTS

A PRAYER FROM THE YEAR OF FAITH

This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

A PRAYER TO THANK GOD

As we near the end of this school year, we have many memories; Happy times with friends and families; Many lessons learned in our school; Games we have played and holidays enjoyed; The pleasure we get from our leisure time and hobbies; Thank you for all our blessings. Thank you God. Amen

WONDERFUL FAMILY MASS ON WEDNESDAY EVENING

A big thank you to everyone who supported a wonderful celebration on Wednesday evening. Thank you, as always, to Fr Jan and to everyone who played their part in making it so special. The choir, in particular, sang beautifully in the Communion Reflection and were great ambassadors for all that is best in our school. It was particularly pleasing to see so many former colleagues and friends who came to support three terrific colleagues who are retiring. Mrs Helen Price has been with us for sixteen years as a Teacher of French; Mrs Marie Carroll has been in the school for the past 22 years in the Science Faculty; and Mr Ian Gaunt has been with us more than half his life having joined for 7 years as a student and subsequently for a further 29 years as a Teacher of History. We thank them all for their long and outstanding service to the school and it was such a pleasure to see them surrounded last night by their family and friends. A really lovely occasion.

MASS ON WEDNESDAY 16 JULY

As you may be aware, we are holding another Mass at 7.00pm on Wednesday 16 July. This will be my last chance to say a huge thank you to as many parents as possible for your incredible support over the years. I hope to see you there.

FINAL MASS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

As usual we will be celebrating Mass with the whole school on the final day of term, Friday 18 July followed by our traditional Sports Awards Assembly. On the final day, if all goes to plan, students will be dismissed at 12.30pm. Please note there will be no school buses available on that day.

NON UNIFORM DAY LAST FRIDAY - THANK YOU

A big thank you to everyone who supported our Non Uniform Day last Friday which raised 676.64 in support of "Just Caring Midlands", a wonderful local charity. I am sure that your generosity will make a difference.

TARGET REVIEW DAY NEXT FRIDAY, 11 JULY

It is now just one week away and I am sure that, as always, we will have a huge turnout from parents to support your sons and daughters with their review of the year. It is always helpful to look back and reflect on what has been achieved and what now needs to happen to address areas for development. Whilst it is of course voluntary for parents it is compulsory for our students. They need to arrive 15 minutes before their interview in full school uniform with their planner and they should depart promptly immediately afterwards. Watch this space.

IMPORTANT LETTER TO ALL PARENTS YESTERDAY

Everyone should have received a blue letter yesterday outlining our plans for the National Strike which has been called by a range of public sector unions for next Thursday, 10 July including the NUT, UNISON and GMB all of whom have members in school. Next Thursday Year 7 should remain at home and all other students will be finishing at 1.20pm. If you missed the letter for any reason please ask for a replacement or check the website www.stacs.org

GUERNSEY 2014 - GOOD LUCK EVERYONE

Once again I am sure the Guernsey Camp 2014 will be another fantastic experience. The Advance Party leaves tomorrow with the main party following next Tuesday. Good luck to Mr Stephenson and everyone involved. Full report shortly.

THE FINAL SHOWING OF LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS LAST NIGHT

At the time of writing I am very much looking forward to seeing this year's production "Little Shop of Horrors" which I know Mrs Johnson, Miss Mortimer, other staff and the whole cast have spent countless hours preparing for. I will report in full next week but I have already heard numerous reports from Tuesday night's show that it is fantastic. Watch this space!

AN OUTSTANDING INDUCTION PROGRAMME FOR YEAR 6

We have been delighted with the hectic programme that has taken place over the last two weeks for the Year 6 students who will be joining us as Year 7 in September. The response of parents and children on both Monday and Wednesday evenings last week as they were allocated to their Houses was excellent. And I understand the 58 Year 6 students who went on the three night residential to Wales were outstanding. And this week we had the whole year group with us on Wednesday for their Induction Day which again, I understand, went extremely well. As you can see a huge amount of work goes into preparing to welcome our new students in September to ensure they get off to a flying start. A very big thank you to Mr McInerney and his staff team for ensuring it all went so well.

WONDERFUL YEAR 13 LEAVERS' MEAL LAST FRIDAY

It was a real privilege to join Year 13 and lots of staff at the Novotel on Broad Street last Friday evening. The students looked fantastic and they enjoyed every minute dancing into the night long after I was tucked up in bed! Thank you to Mrs James and everyone involved in making it special. And on a personal note I was really touched to receive a presentation from the students and will always keep the key ring with the group photo on one side and the saying "The Class of 2014 - we left with Jim"!

JAMES SIN - PHYSICS STUDENT OF THE YEAR REPORT BY MRS BAKER

Congratulations to James Sin in Y12 who has been selected by Birmingham University and the Ogden Trust as one of the award winners for the Birmingham, Solihull & surrounding schools best Physics Students of the Year. Well done to James on a richly-deserved award and a big thank you to Mrs. Ballantine for his nomination.

PADSTOW TO ROCK - PLEASE SUPPORT MISS TUBBS!

If you can support Miss Tubbs please do so either via a sponsor form or online https://www.justgiving.com/Nicola-Tubbs2014/ Thank you.

SPORTS DAY ON TUESDAY 15 JULY

There is always great excitement at Sports Day which will take place once again at Tudor Grange Sports Field. It will involve Years 7, 8 and 9 who will be competing in House Teams. The big question is will Teresa House retain the trophy as Sports Day Champions which they won last year? What is certain is there will be seven other Houses trying to make sure they do not. Whatever the outcome I am sure a great time will be had by all and the eventual winners will be congratulated by all at the final Sports Awards Assembly. We live in hope!

LAST WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

Congratulations to Erin Usher from Year 7 (Newman House 2A) who correctly informed us that the former Director of Communications to the Prime Minister who was recently convicted is Andy Coulson and wins 10. Well done Erin.

THIS WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

Sadly, we know it will not be Andy Murray. For the possibility of winning 10 please tell me the name of the Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion 2014. Email me on j.foley@stacs.bham.sch.uk and don't forget to tell me who you are.

Yours sincerely

JIM FOLEY
