Friday Letter - Issue 33

DEAR PARENTS

A PRAYER FROM THE YEAR OF FAITH

This is our faith.  This is the faith of the Church.  We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Amen.

A BLESSING FROM WALK WITH ME ON THE FEAST OF PENTECOST
Lord, we have known your blessings through this holy season of Eastertide.  Lord, we rejoice in those who have come to faith and the sacraments this Easter.  Lord, we ask for your presence as, like the hesitant disciples, they allowed you to speak through them to all nations on earth.

LOURDES 2014 - A REPORT FROM MR MIASTOWSKI

During half term a group of seven students and staff joined the Archdiocese of Birmingham's annual pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in South France, with the theme for this year being 'the joy of conversion'.  Throughout the week we focused on the Beatitudes and renewal of our faith.  We joined many other school, youth and parish groups from across the Diocese to care for sick, disabled and elderly pilgrims.  Lourdes is such a special place and there were many poignant moments throughout the six days whilst we were there, but perhaps one to note was when Yvonne, Mike Stanley's wife, spoke about her late husband's battle with cancer and passion for music, which inspired many of the liturgies whilst in Lourdes. We were also fortunate to be able to celebrate an International Mass with thousands of other pilgrims from across the world on the Feast of the Ascension.  Well done to three amazing students, Gemma Baker, Emma Harkin and Maisie-Lee Holden, who shared their gifts and talents so generously whilst in Lourdes for the service of others.  Thank you also to Miss Browne and Mr Smith for supporting the pilgrimage and to Mr Smyllie for leading the school party.  Next year will be the Diocese's 75th annual pilgrimage to Lourdes and any Year 11 student who is staying on for sixth form and would like to be part of the school group in 2015 should see Mr Smyllie or myself to register their interest.  Editor's Note: A huge thank you to Mr Miastowski, Mr Smyllie, Miss Browne and Mr Smith for their commitment in making it possible and to Gemma (who also wrote a wonderful report, see www.stacs.org), Emma and Maisie- Lee for being outstanding ambassadors.  Last year my wife and I had the privilege of joining Fr Jan and our school group in Lourdes and it was an experience never to be forgotten.  I recommend it to all our senior students and indeed other adults as well.

WONDERFUL YEAR 13 LEAVERS' MASS
What a privilege it was to be present for the final Mass of Year 13 on 23 May.  As always, a huge thank you to Fr Jan and to everyone involved in preparing a very special celebration.  Particular thanks to Mrs James as Head of Year 13, Mr Martin, Mr Smith and all the staff who were present not forgetting Gillian O'Reilly who sent a beautiful message.  Following the Mass we gathered in time honoured fashion for the team photograph in pouring rain.  Despite the weather spirits remained high as students staff and lots of parents celebrated a special time together.  Well done to everyone involved.

MR FAROOQ SATTAR RIP

We were very saddened to hear of the sudden death of Farooq, the brother of Saqib, one of our cover supervisors, at the young age of 38.  We pray for the repose of Farooq's soul and remember Saqib and his family in our prayers at this sad time.  May he rest in peace.

MR JOHN SNELL RIP

And we were also saddened to hear of the death of John, the father of Dave, one of our Site Team.  We pray for the repose of John's soul and remember Dave and his family in our prayers at this sad time.  May he rest in peace.

YEAR 11 STUDY LEAVE

Next Monday Ms Madden will write to all parents in Year 11 notifying you when they will be leaving school and formally beginning their study leave.  We have been very impressed with the year group throughout the examination period and we are confident all their hard work will be rewarded in August.  In the meantime it is essential they continue to work hard and revise well until the final examination has been completed.

AN IVITATION FROM THE FRIENDS OF KINGS NORTON PARK
Everyone is invited to the Annual Social Gathering of the Friends of Kings Norton Park which takes place at Kings Norton Bowling Club (129 Wychall Lane) on Friday 13 June at 7.00pm.  There is a fish and chip supper, music from singer songwriter Tim Martin, nature talks and lots of fun events.  £5 for adults (if you are eating) and children less or free.  Do come along for a fun evening.

SWAN KS3 ANNUAL LANGUAGE ROLE-PLAY COMPETITION

Well done to Chloe Hadley and Wiktoria Bak!  Our gifted Year 8 girls took part in a language role-play competition at Lordswood Girls School on Wednesday 21 May.  Chloe and Wiktoria performed a scene at the doctor's surgery in French.  The girls proudly represented St Thomas Aquinas and won the competition with flying colours.   A huge thank you to our Foreign Language Assistant, Audrey Ducharme for her preparation and coaching.
