Friday Letter - Issue 30

DEAR PARENTS

A PRAYER FROM THE YEAR OF FAITH

This is our faith.  This is the faith of the Church.  We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Amen.

A PRAYER FROM THE ST BRIGID'S MASS

Let no one disregard you because you are young, but be an example to all the believers in the way you speak and behave, and in your love, your faith and your purity.  1 Timothy 4:12

WONDERFUL MASS AT ST BRIGID'S ON WEDNESDAY EVENING

I have been to hundreds of Masses in my time at St Thomas Aquinas so it is unusual to be able to describe a first but that is what took place on Wednesday evening.  Seven of our students supported by their sponsors, families, friends and staff from school gathered for a Sacramental Celebration Mass.  The seven students had each made an important decision to receive the Sacraments and join the Catholic Church.  Congratulations to Shannon, Maisie-Lee, Emmanuelle, Matthew, Aidan, Jack and Hannah who spent many months in preparation with Mr Miastowski and Anne-Marie.  Thank you, as always, to Fr Jan for making it possible and for leading the Mass and service so beautifully.  A truly wonderful experience for seven special young people and for our whole school community.  Well done to each of them and to everyone who has supported them.

MASS OF THANKSGIVING FOR YEAR 11 YESTERDAY MORNING

Well done to every student in Year 11 for participating so well in a very special celebration of Mass on Thursday morning.  After 5 years it was the last time the year group will celebrate Mass together.  Most of them will be returning in September to the Sixth Form but some of them will not.  Whatever the future holds we wish them every success over the next few important weeks and in their future lives.  May God bless them all.

ST JOHN FISHER PARISH MASS ON 17 MAY

A reminder that we will be completing the cycle of Parish Masses on Saturday 17 May when we visit Fr George and his parishioners at the 6.00pm Mass on Saturday 17 May.  We have numerous former St John Fisher students in school so we hope for an excellent turnout.  As always, everyone is welcome to join us.

WELCOME TO KATY!

We were delighted to hear of the arrival of Katy, the new born daughter of Gillian O'Reilly, Assistant Headteacher in school.  Mother and daughter are doing extremely well!!

WELCOME BACK TO MRS DEVLIN

Just as one is born, another returns!  We were pleased this week to welcome back Mrs Devlin, Head of Teresa House following her maternity leave and the arrival of Ava.  As she told me, it's like she has never been away!

YEAR 7 REPORTS OUT NEXT WEEK

This weekend the senior staff and I will be completing the Year 7 reports which will be issued to parents next Friday, 16 May.  I ask parents to take the time to read the report carefully with your son or daughter, to congratulate them on their successes and to discuss areas for improvement.

YEAR 9 PARENTS EVENING LAST THURSDAY

Thank you to Year 9 students and their parents who attended their Parents Evening last Thursday.  It was good to note that attendance was higher than last year and the parental evaluations were very positive.

PARENTS FORUM MEETING ON MONDAY EVENING

The Parents Forum will be meeting next Monday evening with Ms Madden and Mr McInerney to plan for the Year 6 Introductory Evening on Monday 9 June as well as other business.  If any parent wishes to come along at 7.00pm you will be very welcome.

BEHAVIOUR ON THE BUSES - SOME ENCOURAGING NEWS

As you know, we have been looking closely at the behaviour of some of our students who travel on buses to and from school.  We have been working closely with National Express and have arranged an important meeting with specific students and their parents for Friday 6 June.  In the meantime it is good to be able to report a marked improvement in behaviour.  Long may it continue.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH REPORT FROM MR MIASTOWSKI

Whilst most were enjoying the sunshine on the bank holiday weekend, a committed group of 36 students and 11 staff descended on Earlswood for their practice expedition for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Throughout the two days, students responded exceptionally well to the challenges they faced and, in the face of adversity, their teamwork skills shone through. All students successfully completed the expedition and are now looking forward to the qualification expedition in June.

LAST WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION
Within 2 seconds of the final black being potted I heard my email ping and was informed by Charlotte Thompson from Year 8 (Newman 4B)  that Mark Selby was the new 2014 Snooker World Champion.  Well done to him and well done to Charlotte for getting in so quickly and winning £10 in the process.

THIS WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION
Sixty years ago this week a very famous athletics world record was set.  Who set the record and what was the event?  Email me on j.foley@stacs.bham.sch.uk and don't forget to tell me who you are.

Yours sincerely

JIM FOLEY
