Year 6 Induction Day - 4th July 2012

On Wednesday morning last week 210 Yr 6 students arrived at St Thomas Aquinas School for their induction day. Some looked nervous and apprehensive with others being excited and jovial. It was fantastic to see an array of primary school uniforms with all colours of the rainbow at the start of the day. Mr. Foley opened the assembly with his trusty words of wisdom and expectations for all the students. The simple message of ‘try your best' and ‘be the best person you can be' was remembered from our two induction evenings a week ago and the students certainly lived up to that.

The day continued in House Groups, where the year 6s managed to meet all the other students in their House and, most of all, were able to listen to and get to know their Head of House. All students were keen to impress and took part in ice breaking activities and other reading and writing activities to help them feel comfortable in their new school surroundings. All students had an experience of a lesson at St Thomas Aquinas, ranging from Science with Miss Righton to Music with Mrs Bentley. All students were motivated and energetic in their classes and enjoyed the experiences they had in their House groups.

Lunchtime arrived at a blink of an eye. The Year 6 students loved the freedom of the menu and the food. Once they had finished, we managed to go outside for a run around before the rain came down again!! It was superb to see our Year 6 students settling in well and developing new friendships together.

The final part of the day was a tour around the school where they managed to explore the depths of St Thomas Aquinas, including demonstrations from Mrs McGinley in the Food Technology room and Mr Holt in the fitness room; all students had a real experience of what life is like at St. Thomas Aquinas. The day ended with a quick catch up and evaluation of the day with Heads of House before students went off back home with their parents. All Heads of House were very proud of their students and cannot wait to welcome them fully to our school in September.

It was a pleasure to be part of the day and we want to thank all the Year 6 students for the experience they gave us. We hope you are as excited about coming to St. Thomas Aquinas School as we are to have you here. See you in September!

Miss Jordan
Head of Martin House
