Friday Letter - Issue 36

DEAR PARENTS

A PRAYER - SAINT PETER AND PAUL - FATHERS OF THE CHURCH

We thank you, Lord, for the example given by Ss Peter and Paul.  May we be like St Peter and stand firm in our faith.  May we be like St Paul and spread your word to others.  May we strive for the courage that they showed in giving their lives for the sake of the Church. Amen.

THE FEAST DAY OF SAINT PETER AND PAUL

This morning we gathered as a whole school community to celebrate the Feast Day of two great Saints of the Church, Peter and Paul. Their lives continue to be an inspiration to us all over 2000 years later.  Peter, the humble fisherman who became the rock of the Church and Paul, the sinner who saw the light and spread the Good News. As ever, it was a fitting celebration for the whole school.  Thank you to Father Stefan and to everyone involved.

FAMILY MASS AND MASS OF THANKSGIVING NEXT TUESDAY EVENING

We hope that you will be able to join us for a very special celebration next Tuesday evening.  We will be giving thanks for the service of all those staff who are leaving at the end of term some of whom have spent their entire career at St Thomas Aquinas.  There will be a light buffet and wine afterwards so do try to make this Mass a particular priority.

ST THOMAS AQUINAS IN ROME AS WE SPEAK!

It's a great annual tradition that we visit the Eternal City every year.  He has been so often that I am surprised party leader, Mr Toal has not already received the Freedom of the City.  Maybe this time.  I am sure a great time will be had by all.  Watch this space.

NEXT FRIDAY IS TARGET REVIEW DAY

It takes place next Friday, 6 July and, as ever, I am sure it will be a very successful occasion.  The evaluations that we always run are invariably positive and parental attendance both for this day and the Target Setting Day in November are always fantastic.  A couple of reminders for parents.  We ask that all students, whether accompanied by parents or not, are in their appointed place 15 minutes before their scheduled interview.  Students must attend in full school uniform and be equipped with their planner.  Once their interview has taken place they should return home without delay. Full report shortly.

NO FRIDAY LETTER NEXT WEEK

As a result of Target Review Day there will be no Friday Letter next week.  Normal service will be resumed on Friday 13 July.

FANTASTIC YEAR 6 EVENINGS THIS WEEK

What a pleasure it was to welcome our Year 6 children who will be joining us in September with their parents on Monday and Tuesday evenings this week.  On both occasions the Hall was packed for the introductory talks and uniform displays.  Afterwards parents and children were introduced to the head of house who took them through the detailed paperwork. The atmosphere was terrific and needless to say despite the fact that this week, as throughout the rest of June, has seen appalling weather, on Monday and Tuesday evenings the sun shone brightly.  Well done to Miss Jordan, Miss Lay, Mr McInerney and everyone involved in making the evenings such a success.

YEAR 6 STUDENTS WITH US NEXT WEDNESDAY

Next Wednesday, 4 July we look forward to welcoming the boys and girls from Year 6 to school for the day.  They will arrive in a multiplicity of uniforms from their various primary schools but very quickly they will come together as one big family. Watch this space.

THE YEAR 5 PROGRAMME IS COMPLETE - PHEW!

On Monday of this week we completed the hectic programme of Year 5 visits with the arrival of St Brigid's.  I must say they have been fantastic and the children have clearly enjoyed themselves immensely.  Well done to the staff who supported the programme. Above all a huge thank you to Miss Lay and Hollie Parish for all their amazing work with our feeder primary schools.

ART AND TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION LAST NIGHT - QUITE AMAZING!

Every year that I visit the exhibition of GCSE and A Level work from our Art, Graphics, Textiles and Technology students I am just amazed by what they produce.  And 2012 was no exception.  It was great to see so many staff, students and parents visiting the exhibition to see the quality for themselves.  I congratulate Mr Tinsley and his incredible team for their outstanding work.

LAST FRIDAY WAS THE YEAR 11 PROM - WHAT AN EVENING!

If I am honest at the end of a hard week in school I could really have done without another commitment last Friday evening.  However, from the moment I arrived at the Bromsgrove Hilton I was so pleased to be there.  The lads looked incredibly smart in their suits whilst the girls in their various evening dresses were just stunning.  They arrived in all manner of impressive vehicles (strangely, nobody asked for a lift in my Skoda)  and were then greeted by our in-house photographer, Mr Nolan.  They enjoyed delicious food and danced the night away in one room whilst waiting for the official photographer in another room.  Every single one of them was a credit to themselves, their family and their school.  Do check out the website for all the photographs and keep an eye on the Birmingham Mail where they will be featuring shortly.  Thank you, as always, to the many staff who attended the evening and especially to the key organisers, Mr Perry and Miss Stevens.  Well done to everyone involved.

LAST WEEKEND IT WAS THE BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH EXPEDITION - MR THOMAS REPORTS

Last weekend over 40 Year 9 and 10 students embarked on their Bronze qualification expedition through the Clent Hills.  Well done to all participants who successfully completed the weekend.  As always the students were supported by staff and some sixth form students who gave up their weekend.  Thank you to Mrs Devlin, Mr Flood, Mr McInerney, Mr Miastowski, Mr Robinson, Mr Shanks, and the sixth formers, Chris, Daniel, Jake, Joe and Kieran.

TONIGHT IT'S THE YEAR 13 LEAVERS' MEAL

Tonight the action moves from Bromsgrove to the City Centre as we will be at the Novotel on Broad Street joining our Year 13 students for their leavers' meal.  I am sure that once again it will be a great occasion led by Miss O'Reilly, Head of Sixth Form and Mrs James, Head of Year 13.  Afterwards there will be speeches and lots of dancing as we say farewell for the final time to our most senior year group as they go off to take their place in the world.  We wish them well this summer with their results and in their future lives.  I can assure parents that I shall be in bed by midnight as most of the party head for Broad Street into the early hours.  Full report shorty.

BEST OF BRITISH SHOWCASE

On Monday 9 July at 7.00pm we will host a showcase to celebrate ‘Best of British'.  Come and join us for an evening of dance, drama and music performances. Other British favourites such as strawberries and cream will be served during the interval. Contact the school if you would like tickets for this event. There is no charge for tickets but you will have the opportunity to make a donation to charity during the interval.

LAST QUIZ QUESTION

Congratulations to Constance Manyere of Year 10 (6C, Fisher House) who correctly informed us that both St John Fisher and St Thomas More died in the year 1535. Well done Constance who wins £10.

THIS WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

We will know on Sunday.  Who are the 2012 European football champions? A clue - it will not be England. Do let me know by emailing j.foley@stacs,bham.sch.uk and don't forget to tell me who you are.

Yours sincerely

JIM FOLEY
