Year 9 Boys Cricket - 21st June 2012

STACS Year 9 boys took to their first game of the season in difficult conditions, and with one player down. Against a strong Baverstock team, they were unfortunate to not come away with the victory on the day.

Due to weather problems, the game was played on Astroturf but this didn't deduct from the quality that was on show as STACS put in an impressive bowling display taking regular wickets throughout Baverstock's batting innings. Pick of the bowlers was Jack Howley, who took 3 wickets, Pablo Allen and Kieran Harris who bowled very accurately causing the batsmen of Baverstock real problems. Within 15 overs, STACS had taken the full 10 wickets of the opposition giving them real optimism that this was their day.

However, STACS found the conditions hard to bat in and lost their first few wickets without really threatening the score made by the opposition. The introduction of Mathew Pakes gave the team some impetus and hope that a successful run chase was on, as he scored a quick-fire 16 off 7 balls with one expertly played 'reverse-sweep' shot. Unfortunately however, when he lost his wicket, it meant that the pressure of scoring 86 was too much, causing the subsequent wickets to fall as STACS looked to score quick runs off the remaining overs. Baverstock in the end closed out the game and took victory. To challenge at that level, with a team largely made up of Year 8 players, and with one player short on the day, was very impressive and something to be proud of. Man of the Match was Jack Howley for his impressive bowling and the leadership he demonstrated through captaining the team. Well done guys!
