Year 9 BCP Public Speaking Competition

On Thursday 7 July, there was a great end to another fantastic year of public speaking at the school. This year's Year 9 Public Speaking competition, hosted by St John Wall School in Handsworth, was once again on the theme, "The World's Greatest Invention". Following last year's runaway victory on ‘bubblewrap', this year's team had a lot to live up to!

The St Thomas Aquinas team had been working over the past few weeks researching, writing and rehearsing the speech on their chosen invention: baby wipes! A quirky topic certainly challenged the talented team to write their three-minute speech, although it did easily lend itself to the group's strong suit - humour!

On the day, Haydn Cadogan, our speaker, delivered his speech with a confidence, fluency and effortlessness that would far exceed many adults! The team were complimented by the judges on the strength of argument, structure and delivery. They also enjoyed hearing about the other schools' ‘inventions', ranging from tin foil to the human race! The standards in the competition had noticeably risen in this age group and it was clear to everyone that it was a very close contest. In the end, our team were pipped into second place by just one mark to Bishop Walsh, whose speaker was a deserving winner with the topic ‘Communication'.

Congratulations to the team who have, once again, maintained the school's high standards in public speaking and preserved our distinguished reputation in these competitions across all age groups. Well done to: Haydn Cadogan, Beatrice Dix, Gemma Baker, Charlotte Flynn and Kaylib Clements.
