Friday Letter - Issue 27

DEAR PARENTS

A PRAYER ON ST GEORGE'S DAY AT THE BEGINNING OF A NEW TERM

Lord, on St George's Day we ask you to bless our school at the beginning of a new term.  We pray especially for those in special need in our school, our country and around the world.  Comfort those recovering from the dreadful earthquake in China, the people of Poland in their mourning and help the many thousands of people still trying to return home after the disruption caused by the volcano in Iceland.  Amen.

MRS CYNTHIA JAMES RIP

We were greatly saddened to hear of the death of Cynthia, the mother of Mrs Ballantine, our head of Science.  We pray for the repose of Cynthia's soul and think of Sue and the whole family at this sad time.  May she rest in peace.

MR JOSEPH JAMES RIP

We were also saddened to hear of the death of Joseph, the father-in-law of Mrs James.  We pray for the repose of Joseph's soul and think of Terry, Liz and the whole family at this sad time.  May he rest in peace.

MR ANDREW MOORE RIP

I was privileged to join the family and many friends of Andrew for his funeral which took place in Wellington, Shropshire on Wednesday.  Andrew was my cousin and is greatly missed by all who knew him.  We pray for the repose of his soul and think of Mary, Malcolm, Tim, Helen, John and the whole family at this sad time.  May he rest in peace.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MR SMITH

It was wonderful to be present for Mr Smith's debut as Deacon in our school at Wednesday morning's Voluntary Mass.  Mr Smith was recently ordained as Deacon which is a very important step on his journey to becoming a Catholic priest.  He will be assisting Fr Stefan in all our Masses from now on.  We congratulate Frank and his family and thank God for this wonderful blessing on our school.

LENTEN CHARITIES 2010 - AMAZING GENEROSITY!

Next week I shall publish the final figures for each charity we supported this year.  What I can tell you though is that the overall total is £5,750.  Thank you to everyone for your amazing generosity - the cheques have already been sent!

SOLI HOUSE - WELL DONE YEAR 10

It was before Easter but just a word to say what a fantastic group they were which is what our staff said and was also the view of Fr Bill and the Soli House team.  Thank you to Mrs Carter, Mr Ingram, Mr Perry, Miss Rowlands and of course Anne-Marie.

WELL DONE TO SOPHIE AND JAMES

Congratulations to two Year 12 students who recently received their Silver Guild of St Stephen to mark ten years of altar serving at St John Fisher parish.  It's achievements like this that remind us of the goodness of so many of our young people.  Congratulations to Sophie and James - we are very proud of you!

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME TO ELLEN MARY

We were delighted to hear of the arrival of Ellen Mary last Thursday at 8lbs 8ozs.  Congratulations to Ms Mary Cutler, our head of Performing Arts and to Trevor on the birth of their beautiful daughter.

AND CONGRATULATIONS TO MR AND MRS DOUST

Congratulations to Miss Foley from the English Faculty who became Mrs Doust on Easter Monday.  They had a wonderful day and we wish Catherine and Jim a very happy life together.

WELCOME TO THREE NEW STAFF

We are pleased to welcome three new staff who are supporting us this term.  Mr Lucas joins us in ICT, Mr Walters in Science and Miss Clapham (a former student) in Music.  We wish them every success and happiness in their time with us.

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY - ASTONISHING FIGURES!

I am delighted to inform you that our overall attendance figure for 2009 - 2010 is 93.7% which is a full one percent improvement on last year.  And punctuality to school is 97.7%!  Congratulations to Miss Lay, Mrs Bridgman and everyone involved in this fantastic achievement.

WYCHALL CHILDREN AND FAMILY CENTRE - AN APOLOGY

I was appalled to discover that a member of staff from Wychall Children and Family Centre decided to issue a leaflet to our pupils as they were leaving school on Monday afternoon this week.  The leaflet contained wholly inappropriate advice relating to sexual health.  I am pleased to say that shortly afterwards I received a fulsome verbal and written apology from the Centre Manager making it clear it was a dreadful error and it will never happen again.  Apologies to any parents who may have been concerned by this situation.

AQUINAS FIRST - Pupils Conquer Snowdon - REPORT FROM MR MCINERNEY

Last Tuesday saw the World Challenge party, including Mr Flood, try and conquer the tallest mountain south of Ben Nevis. Despite hitting several mini obstacles, 3 pupils made it to the summit to back in the glorious sunshine and views to die for. A huge well done to Martha Dix, John Kenny, Liam McHugh, Sophie Cookson and Rose Bisset who all made the long journey to Snowdon and back. A special thank you to Mr Flood for helping out with the driving and giving up a day of his Easter Holidays. See the school website for a full account of our walk.

FANTASTIC TRIP TO FRANCE OVER EASTER

I was delighted to read Mrs Bell's account of the really successful trip to France she led during Easter.  See the website for more details.  Well done to everyone involved.

Car-Free Challenge - 26 April to 7 May

The Year 8 Pupil Voice Team have been working on an environmental campaign in school called the Car-Free Challenge. Please support them by encouraging your sons and daughters to walk or take the bus to school rather than coming by car. There will be prizes for the most improved forms in Years 7 and 8.

GENERAL ELECTION QUESTION TIME WITH THE SIXTH FORM NEXT WEDNESDAY

I am pleased to report that I have arranged for the parliamentary candidates of the three main parties for the Northfield Constituency to appear on Question Time in front of the Sixth Form at 3.30 pm next Wednesday.  This is a golden opportunity to hold our politicians to account and to raise the awareness of our students to the key issues of the day.  Full report next week.
