Friday Letter - Issue 29

DEAR PARENTS

A PRAYER FOR EQUALITY

As we live this day, Father, help us to become Christ to our neighbours, food to the hungry, health to the sick, friend to the lonely, freedom to the enslaved.  We ask this prayer through Christ our Lord Amen

BOSCO HOUSE MASS NEXT TUESDAY

All parents of students in Bosco House are warmly invited to join us next Tuesday, 8 May at 8.45 am for our Bosco House Mass.  I know that Mr Stephenson and the House have been working hard to ensure it will be a lovely occasion.  I am sure their efforts will be rewarded. Watch this space!

FINAL PARISH MASS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR IS AT ST JOHN FISHER, WEST HEATH

As always, everyone is most welcome to join us for our seventh and final Parish Mass of the School Year 2011-2012 which will take place next Saturday 12 May at St John Fisher Church.  Mass begins at 6.00 pm and as we have countless former St John Fisher students in school we are expecting a big turnout.  We look forward to joining Fr George and his parishioners and, as ever, I am sure we will receive a warm welcome.  Full report shortly.

A VERY SPECIAL BOSCO ASSEMBLY YESTERDAY

I am delighted to report that we had a very special Assembly in school yesterday morning.  It was the opportunity for Bosco House to present a huge cheque (£1,202) to Mrs Georgina Moseley, the mother of Harry Moseley who inspired so many people in his short life before his sad death due to a brain tumour.  Mrs Moseley, in Harry's memory, has established the charity Help Harry, Help Others which is raising a huge amount of money to fund research into the disease.  It was great to welcome Georgina and Mr Tim Andrews, trustee of the charity as well as Mrs Jenny Fulford (Billie Jayne's mum) and Mrs Annette Duffy (Bosco Link Governor).  In addition to the cheque for Harry we were also delighted to present Jenny with two cheques of £500 each from the selling of bracelets at Billie Jayne's funeral which will go to Clic Sargent and also a further £500 to Bone Cancer Research.  Well done to Bosco House Captain, Reimar Williams and Deputy House Captain, Ursula Hardy who presented the cheques and indeed the whole house for their incredible generosity.  I can tell you that our visitors were simply stunned by their visit.  Well done everyone.

KARI ELLIS RIP

We were greatly saddened to hear last week of the sudden death of Kari, a former student of St Columba's Primary School who died of a blood clot.  Kari was a Year 7 student at Waseley Hills High School, a terrible tragedy.  We pray for the repose of Kari's soul and remember her family and friends at this very sad time.  May she rest in peace.

LAST NIGHT IT WAS YEAR 10 PARENTS' EVENING

Last night we were very pleased to meet lots of Year 10 students with their parents for a crucial parents' evening.  With the departure of Year 11 on the horizon Year 10 will become our key focus over the next 12 months.  The evaluations were extremely positive. Thank you for your support.

AND NEXT WEEK IT IS THE TURN OF YEAR 9

Our final subject based parents' evening of the school year takes place next Thursday, 10 May and, as always, we are expecting a huge turnout.  Year 9 have now completed two terms of their GCSE courses so it is an important time for taking stock and assessing their progress.  Watch this space.

ALTON CASTLE  A REPORT FROM ANNE-MARIE (LAY CHAPLAIN)

Last week, on a very wet and windy Wednesday, 72 Year 8 students and 7 staff set off in 2 coaches for Alton castle Retreat centre for a 3 day retreat. The staff at the castle were amazed by the enthusiasm of the students as soon as we arrived and that enthusiasm continued throughout our rain soaked stay. Despite the weather all students embraced the activities and were a credit to the school in their attitude and the way they joined in, not just the activities, but the prayer times, singing and Mass. It was a pleasure to be with them all. Our website has photos of the retreat and students share their experiences of the week. A huge thank you goes to Mrs Bentley, Mr Ingram, Miss Jordan, Mr Keegan, Mr Miastowski and Miss Stimson, the staff who accompanied us on the retreat Their support and commitment made a real difference to the students' experience.            Editor's Note - And a big thank you to Anne Marie and the whole staff team without whom it would not be possible.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES - A REPORT FROM MRS BELL

On Wednesday 2 May we welcomed children from four of our feeder primary schools to St Thomas Aquinas School for a French role-play competition. The Drama Studio was transformed into a French café scene and each group had 5 minutes to perform their play. One customer found a snail in her coffee and another was sent away in an ambulance after an allergic reaction to the pepper in her meal! It was clear that the children and their teachers had put a lot of effort and imagination into writing the scripts and practising their parts. After much deliberation the trophy was awarded to Mary Ellen, Amandeep, Jake and Olivia from St Brigid's School. Congratulations to them and also to the children from Our Lady and St Rose of Lima, St Joseph's and St James' School. I must also thank our Year 8 students who helped with the event and who performed their own role-play: Pablo Allan Lily Beddows, Aidan Doherty, James Kelly, Kieran Tierney.  Editor's Note - And a huge thank you to Mrs Bell for organising it all so brilliantly!

A' LEVEL MONOLOGUES - A REPORT FROM MRS CUTLER

On Tuesday 1st May, the Drama department invited Sixth Form parents to watch their sons and daughters perform their A' Level monologues to two Edexcel examiners. You would expect students to be nervous as there is nothing more daunting than performing to an audience entirely on your own.  It was a privilege to be a member of the audience and each student gave an outstanding performance. Examiners never give anything away but I am sure they were impressed with what they saw!  Well done to Shannon Alebon, Samuel Allan, Kathleen Farrell, Sophie Field, Jack Molloy, Katelyn Mchugh, Kloe Owens, Georgia Peal, Sian Peal, Chloe Rea, Vivenne Roa, Megan Sinclair Brown and Keiran Snowe. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Byfield for her work with Year 12 and our Head of Drama, Mrs Kafai for going the extra mile to ensure the evening was a success.  Editor's Note - Another great success. Well done to all concerned.
