Friday Letter - Issue 28

DEAR PARENTS

Lord you are risen, you are alive.

Like the apostles we can only be amazed, struggling to believe that the resurrection is true and real.

Bless us in our weak faith.

Strengthen us through your resurrection.

May the new life you bring to us be a blessing throughout the Eastertide. Amen

LENTEN CHARITIES - FURTHER GOOD NEWS

Last week I was delighted to report that we had collected a record amount for our 8 Lenten Charities. That was before hearing about a very generous collection that was taken at the funeral of Mrs Chew's Father-in-law to the tune of £414. That was added to the total collected by Fisher House for the Fisher House Foundation making a grand total of £1,001 for them and a whole school total of £9,286. Thank you to Mrs Chew and to everyone on a truly remarkable effort.

ALTON CASTLE TRIP FOR YEAR 8 THIS WEEK

The weather could hardly have been worse as our students and staff set off to Alton Castle, the junior Diocesan Retreat Centre in North Staffordshire on Wednesday morning. Nevertheless, I'm sure they will have had a wonderful time both spiritually and socially. Full report next week.

ST JOHN FISHER PARISH MASS IN A FORTNIGHT'S TIME

Our seventh and final Parish Mass of the 2011-2012 school year will take place at St John Fisher, West Heath at 6:00pm on Saturday 12 May. We look forward to joining Father George and parishioners for what is sure to be a wonderful celebration. We have a hugh number of former John Fisher Primary School students in school so we are expecting a big turnout. Watch this space.

MRS MARY FITZPATRICK RIP

We were saddened to hear of the death of Mary, the Grandmother of Mrs Angela McDermott, our Finance Officer. We pray for the repose of Mary's soul and think of Angela and the whole family at this sad time. May she rest in peace.

TWO IMPORTANT PARENT EVENINGS COMING UP

Thursday 3 May - Year 10 Parents Evening

Just one year to go before the vital GCSE examinations in 2013. It is essential that all Year 10 students attend accompanied by their parents.

Thursday 10 May - Year 9 Parents Evening

One year in on the GCSE courses. Is your son or daughter on track to achieve their target grades? It is imperative that you accompany him or her and find out so you will be able to congratulate them on their successes and address any weaknesses they may have.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR AMAZING YEAR 11 AND YEAR 10 BASKETBALL TEAMS

I'm absolutely delighted to tell you that our Year 11 Basketball team are champions of Birmingham again! On Wednesday evening they defeated John Willmott School in the semi final by 36-15 and in the final they beat St John Wall School 49 -34. This is a marvellous achievement and is a repeat of their success as Year 10 champions last year and last night our Year 10 Basketball team also became Birmingham champions defeating Kings Norton Boys 37-29. Fantastic!

LAST WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

Last week I asked you how far our Head of Geography, Miss Hearn had to run last Sunday in the London Marathon. I can tell you that the answer is 26.2 miles as we were correctly informed by Gemma Baker from More House, 6C who wins £10. Well done Gemma. And I'm also pleased to report that Miss Hearn completed the course in the fantastic time of 3 hours 33 minutes. Well done Miss Hearn!

THIS WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

Some astonishing football results this past week but I will quietly avoid references to Manchester United or Aston Villa. Who was sent off for Chelsea in their incredible game against Barcelona? Email me on j.foley@stacs.bham.sch.uk and remember to tell me who you are.

Yours sincerely

JIM FOLEY
