Sports Results (Week Beginning 27th February)

Year 11 Football County Cup finalists!

It was a semi-final that was much more about the result than the actual performance. As the Year 11 boys arrived at the opponents' ground in Wolverhampton, we knew it was going to be a difficult game. Aquinas started brightly and we had Highfield School on the back foot from the off.

Tory Herbert's physical presence and fancy footwork proved to be a huge problem amongst their defence. Through Tory we almost took the lead in the first half. However an offside flag was correctly raised by the linesman. With all the attacking football that was being played, it did leave us open to a counter attack. Their huge centre forward managed to get through our defence and the ball fell to their right midfielder who only had to tap the ball in from six yards. Fortunately our left back, Tom Lowe, read the situation well and performed a heroic goal line clearance to keep it 0 - 0 at half time.

As the second half progressed, the opponents began to come into the game and pose more of our threat in our half. Both teams looked like they had the potential to win the game and when the ball took a deflection and rattled back off our post it was clear that luck was on our side.

The middle of the park was dominated by Anthony Fletcher throughout the game. His work rate, skill and clever through balls created chances that we failed to finish. However a well-executed corner from Luke Douse met Tory Herbert's head and the ball cannoned back off the cross bar.

That seemed to be the end of normal time and we looked to be heading for extra time, even penalties, but the ball came out to Anthony Fletcher who twisted and turned in the box, flying to the floor! The referee pointed to the spot. Penalty! Jack Hill stepped up and rifled the ball into the back of the net making it 1 - 0 to Tommies in the final few minutes of the game.

Moments later the full-time whistle went and it was Jack Hill and the whole team's efforts which saw St Thomas Aquinas reach the Year 11 Football County Cup Final for 2012. Well done lads!
