Our School...

Highest number of applications for places in Year 7 next year since 2005!

Friday Letter - Issue 37

DEAR PARENTS

THANK YOU GOD

As we near the end of this school year, we have many memories.  Happy times with friends and families; many lessons learned in our school; games we have played and holidays enjoyed; the pleasure we get from our leisure time and hobbies.  Thank you for all our blessings.  Thank you God, Amen.

A VERY SPECIAL FAMILY MASS LAST NIGHT

Last night we were celebrating our termly Family Mass but we were also giving thanks for the service to our school of two very special people.  Mrs Nuala Jones and Mrs Irene Barclay as Deputy Head and Assistant Head respectively have made a huge contribution to our school so it was fitting that we came together as a community to thank them and God for everything they have done for St Thomas Aquinas School.  We were delighted that our School Chaplain, Fr Stefan was joined by Fr Jan, Nuala's Parish Priest, in celebrating the Mass.  Full report next week.

EXCELLENT VISIT FROM FR GEORGE

Last Thursday we were very pleased to welcome Fr George, Parish Priest of St John Fisher, West Heath.  Fr George met lots of staff and students and spoke to his young parishioners at the end of the day.  I must say it was a really good session and it was great to see the students' enthusiasm, particularly when Fr George told them he was eager to work with them to restore the parish youth group that was very active in Fr Cyril's time.  A big thank you to Fr George for giving up his time to be with us.

WONDERFUL VOLUNTARY MASS WITH 7CCO ON WEDNESDAY MORNING

Even though we are now in Vertical Tutoring groups it was great to see Miss Connolly's form turn out in huge numbers to celebrate their time together this year.  As Fr Stefan reminded us, friendship is a wonderful gift and it was certainly evident on Wednesday morning.  Well done to everyone involved.

MRS KATHLEEN HURLEY RIP

We were greatly saddened to hear of the death of Kathleen last Friday.  Her funeral took place at St Thomas More Church, Sheldon on Wednesday and she will be greatly missed by the whole family and her many friends.  We have numerous relations of Kathleen in school and we think of them at this sad time.  In particular, we extend our condolences to Kathleen's husband, Dennis, a well known figure and former Catholic headteacher.  May she rest in peace.

ANOTHER VERY SUCCESSFUL TARGET REVIEW DAY LAST FRIDAY

We had an excellent day last Friday as students and parents turned out in force to review the progress of their sons and daughters over the past year.  Once again the parental turnout of 72% was amazing on a normal working day and shows the high value that parents place on these one-to-one discussions.  Thank you.

AND THE UNIFORM SUPPLIERS WERE DELIGHTED TOO

As you know, we took the opportunity as we were moving to the new house system to invite our two uniform suppliers to join us last Friday.  Both Clive Mark and Mansuri did a brisk trade and there were lots of good bargains on offer.  Considering the success of the venture we shall build in the opportunity to buy uniform to the Target Review Day in July from now on.

GREAT DAY WITH YEAR 6 ON WEDNESDAY

It's always a good day but I must say that the Year 6 students from 2010 made a fantastic impression on Wednesday.  They gathered in the Hall in a huge variety of uniforms from their various primary schools and it will be wonderful to see the same young people in the same place as the new family of St Thomas Aquinas in their new uniforms in September.  Once again they met their head of house and took part in sample lessons as well as touring the school and the excitement of recording their fingerprint for the cashless canteen!  As always, a big thank you to all the staff involved especially Miss Jordan and Mr Perry who have worked so hard to ensure the induction process went so well.  Thank you.

YEAR 7 STUDENTS TAKE ON the CHALLENGE - REPORT FROM MRS DEVLIN

On Tuesday morning eight Year 7 pupils went to Frankley Community High School to participate in an RE Challenge as part of the OAKS Collegiate.  Well done to Shannen Doren, Kieran Flemming, Jack Howley, Ryan Kulas, Sian McGinn, Amelia Mulhern, Merlin Valiyaparambil and Hamza Yafai.

Year 10 Enterprise AND IAG Days 2010 - REPORT FROM MR GAY

Monday 5 July was Year 10 Enterprise Day.  Students in Year 10 arrived at school dressed in ‘smart' business clothes and certainly impressed us with how great they looked.  The aim of the day was to work as a team.  A great day was had by all and a huge thank you to Lyn Shields and her team from BXL for running the day.  On Tuesday 6 July each student had a 20 minute mock-interview in the sixth form common room to prepare them for the future.  A big thank you again, to Lyn from BXL, to all the volunteer interviewers and all the Year 10 subject teachers who ran the sessions.  The whole day went really well and our Year 10s now leave us for a fortnight of new challenges and opportunities before returning on Thursday 22 July to report back on their experiences.  Thank you to the amazing Miss Connolly for her tireless work in coordinating the work placements and the Year 10 team for supporting our students in their search for a workplace.

A REMINDER ABOUT THE DEPARTURE OF THREE SPECIAL PEOPLE FROM OUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Miss Marie Ireland

At the end of term Miss Marie Ireland retires from St Peter's, Bartley Green after 19 years as Headteacher.  Marie has been an excellent colleague who has sent us numerous wonderful children over the years.  We wish her a long and happy retirement but before that all past pupils and parents are invited to join Miss Ireland between 2.30 pm and 6.00 pm on Thursday 22 July in the School Hall.

Mr Jim Henry

A reminder that the special Mass to mark Jim's departure from St Joseph's, Kings Norton takes place at 7.00 pm on Friday 16 July followed by a buffet.  All former St Joseph's pupils and their parents are very welcome.

Mrs Brigid Nolan

And a reminder that Mrs Nolan retires from St Brigid's at the end of term.  There will be a special Mass marking the retirement of Mrs Nolan after 39 years as a teacher which takes place on Thursday 22 July.

ARRIVEDERCI ROMA

In the early hours of last Friday morning the staff and students who took part in this year's trip to Rome arrived back at school tired but also in high spirits with memories of the Eternal City still fresh in their minds.  The students who took part in the trip had a wonderful experience visiting many of the major sights of Rome and were excellent ambassadors of our school.  Thanks to Mrs O'Connell, Miss Samuel, Mr Smyllie and Mr Toal for their care and enthusiasm in leading the trip.  Editor's Note (Dictated by Mr Toal) Staff showing no concern for themselves and dedication to the job were present and reported for duty later the same Friday morning.

FAMILY FUN DAY AT ST EDWARD'S TOMORROW

Everyone would be most welcome to join the Family Fun Day which will take place in the grounds of St Edward's Primary School, Greenland Road, Selly Park.  For further information about the day and the work of the Irish Welfare and Information Centre please visit www.iwic.org.

THIS WEEKEND THE EXODUS BEGINS

Guernsey

On Saturday the Advance Party (five Year 9 boys and Messrs Houston, Perry and Tinsley) leave for Guernsey in preparation for the main party that will set off next Wednesday.  As usual we are taking 76 Year 7 students who are full of excitement and anticipation ahead of the annual Camp.  Good luck and best wishes to them all and thank you to the Camp Leader, Mr Stephenson and all the staff involved.

Taize

And also this Saturday 20 sixth form students depart for Taize, the world famous international retreat centre in France.  Many of them had such a wonderful experience last year that they are going for a second time.  A big thank you to Mr and Mrs O'Connell who are leading the party.

LAST WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

No joy with football or tennis, perhaps we should focus on Croquet!  Congratulations to Luke Roberts of 7JDE who correctly informed us that Rafael Nadal is the 2010 Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion.  Well done Luke who wins £5.

THIS WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

Let's hope for a great final.  Who are the 2010 World Cup winners?

Yours sincerely

JIM FOLEY
