Healthy Eating Activity Day

On Tuesday 23rd June, 5 pupils accompanied Mrs McGinley to Hillcrest School to take part in a Healthy Food Activity Day which had been organised by the Food Tech teachers alongside the OAKS Collegiate. They had the opportunity to work with pupils from 4 other schools to plan and cook a range of healthy dishes, working closely with professional chef, Darren Edwards, from Birmingham University Banqueting Suite. It would be fair to say that he was extremely impressed with the standard of their work as well as their enthusiasm and attitude.

A huge well done should go to the pupils from Year 8 and Year 9, who were fantastic ambassadors for our school. One of our teams was the overall winner and the prize is a tour of the kitchens and a ‘posh’ meal at the University on Tuesday 17th July. Thanks also go to former pupil, Tom Kavanagh, who has just completed his first year at Birmingham College of Food, who also helped during the day.

We have also had Birmingham City Environmental Health Officers in the Food Technology department. Don’t panic, we haven’t got pests! They came to give a presentation to a group of 30 Year 9 pupils called ‘Healthy Tums in Brum’ which gave us lots of useful food safety, hygiene and nutritional advice to think about.

Well done to all the pupils involved.
