Year 9 Cricket Fixture - St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School beat Wheelers Lane Boys by 8 runs.

The much anticipated first fixture for the Year 9 boys lived up to the hype as they beat Wheelers Lane boys in a pulsating encounter on Monday evening. After winning the toss, captain Gerard Henry elected to bat first and alongside Pablo Allen, gave STACS a solid start with 3 boundaries coming inside of the first 2 overs. However, Wheelers lane struck back with Gerard and Pablo falling to some accurate bowling from the home side. However with Naim 'Boom Boom' Luhar coming in alongside Aaron Villanueva, the batting looked as strong as ever for the year 9 boys and Naim struck a quick fire 20 runs off 15 balls, including a huge 6, to give the visitors real impetus in the game. Matt Pakes joined in on the act after the wicket of Aaron but unfortunately, the wickets of Naim and Matt in quick succession left STACS struggling for runs. The addition of Patrick Hickey steadied the ship as he ended not out on 5 runs giving STACS 58 to defend off 16 overs.

It was the perfect start to defend this total as Naim and Gerard applied pressure on the opening batsmen with some electrifying bowling and taking wickets early on putting Wheelers Lane on the back foot. The addition of Pablo and Mathew Pakes to the bowling continued to put the batsmen under pressure but Wheelers were taking lots of quick singles to reduce the total. However Ryan Crozier was quick in the field and excellently ran out one of their lead batsmen from midwicket throwing the ball from the ground after stopping a boundary. Pablo Allen continued this pressure with 2 quick fire qickets and some very efficient bowling but the singles continued and Wheelers needed 18 runs off 12 balls to win.   Staring defeat in the face, STACS turned to Aaron Villanueva to bowl a brilliant last over preventing Wheelers from scoring runs meaning that the Year 9 boys recorded their first victory of the year winnijng by 8 runs.   Great effort all round and a special mention to Jourdan Snowe who was a brillaint team player. Man of the Match was Naim Luhar. Well done boys!
