Friday Letter - Issue 31

DEAR PARENTS

A PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH

This is our faith.  This is the faith of the Church.  We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Amen.

A BLESSING FROM WALK WITH ME ON PENTECOST SUNDAY
Veni Sancte Spiritus!  Come, Holy Spirit!  Bless us, created in your image and likeness, Father God.  Bless us, redeemed by your Resurrection, Lord Jesus.  Bless us, fill us with your gifts, Holy Spirit.  Veni Sancte Spiritus!  Come, Holy Spirit!

OUR FINAL PARISH MASS TAKES PLACE TOMORROW AT ST JOHN FISHER
A reminder that our final Parish Mass of the school year takes place tomorrow, Saturday 18 May at St John Fisher, West Heath at 6.00 pm.  We very much look forward to joining Fr George and his parishioners for what is sure to be another lovely celebration.  We have numerous former St John Fisher pupils in school so we are hoping for a very good turnout.  As always, everyone is most welcome to join us.   Full report next week.

MASS FOR THE DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES AT ST CHAD'S ON SUNDAY
I am very pleased to be joining the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes over half term.  In preparation there is a special Mass at St Chad's on Sunday at 2.00 pm which will include the St Thomas Aquinas group.  Watch this space.

NON UNIFORM DAY WILL NOW TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY 21 JUNE
Apologies for the postponement of today's scheduled non uniform day.  It will now take place on Friday 21 June and we will be raising money for our Golden Jubilee Charity, Brushstrokes.

YEAR 13 LEAVERS' MASS NEXT FRIDAY
It is always a very emotional occasion when Year 13 have their final Leavers' Mass in the Common Room.  I am sure 2013 will be no different.  Of course they all have lots of exams after half term and they will gather for their Leavers' Meal and Ball on 28 June but next Friday will be their final spiritual celebration and, therefore, a very special occasion.  Year 13 parents are welcome.  Full report shortly.

OUR BIG DAY ON 6 JULY IS FAST APPROACHING!
Those of you who are keen listeners of Radio WM may have heard the Carl Chinn Show from 12 until 2 last Sunday.  If so, at 1.30 pm you may have been surprised to hear him introduce James Ingram and myself.  It was a golden opportunity to publicise our Golden Jubilee celebration and, in particular, the big day on Saturday 6 July.  Carl could not have been more welcoming and we hope that lots and lots of former Tommy's students and staff heard the message.  If you missed it you can catch up on the iPlayer over the next couple of days or, alternatively, log on to the website www.stacs.org

FINAL PLANS ARE NEARLY IN PLACE
This week the planning committee met once again and it was good to see how this enormous celebration is beginning to come together.  A large number of people have now registered on the website and those who wish to take part in the celebration meal are booking their places.  After half term tickets for the meal (£15) and the evening celebration (£5) will go on general sale.  It really does promise to be a fantastic day.  Visitors will gather from midday in the Hall and at 2.00 pm there will be a Mass of Thanksgiving.  There will be tours of the school throughout the afternoon, a celebration meal at 5.00 pm and an evening of music and craic from 7.00 pm onwards.  There will be a huge Marquee in the playground and we have booked extensive parking on Bristol Road opposite Bournville College with shuttle buses running throughout the day.  Former Head of History, Mr Pete Roberts will be on hand to sign "Tommy's 2", there is a film of the past 50 years and lots of memorabilia.  Naturally, such a day involves countless people in the planning but I must, in particular, thank 2 people.  Mr Ingram, our Marketing and Website Manager and Mrs Williamson, our Business Manager have worked tirelessly to bring it all together.  I am sure their efforts will be richly rewarded.  Thank you James and Sharon!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL

I am delighted to report that our first headtacher, Mr Paul Olsen was 90 on Tuesday.  It was particularly special for us in that Paul and his wife Mary invited our Marketing and Website Manager, Mr James Ingram to join him for his big day at his home in Burnham-on-Sea.  We were delighted that Paul agreed to record a special message that we will share on our big day on 6 July.  I have had a sneak preview and I can tell you it is quite something.  Watch this space.  Happy Birthday Paul!

HALFOLDS - A REPORT FROM MRS COOKE

On Wednesday 8May, we were delighted to host an exciting collaboration between the worlds of business and education. Mr Phil O'Connor, Head of People Development at Halfords and himself a former student of STACS, brought along a group of 10 colleagues from his Graduate Trainee Programme. The day started with a powerful and moving introduction by our Guest Speaker, Mr Richard McCann. Richard held both staff and students captivated and inspired by his personal story of triumph over early tragedy and adversities. The Graduates then spent the day working alongside ten of our own Sixth Form Students, developing their confidence and honing their presentation skills. Their workshops were coordinated by Tessa Morton, a trained and experienced actress who has been involved in corporate training for many years. Activities involved strategies for overcoming nerves to bring personality into presentations and techniques to help craft a story and engage an audience.  Everyone involved found the day to be rewarding and inspiring. Full congratulations go to all of the students involved who were especially commended by our visitors for their enthusiasm and honesty. In Mr O'Connor's words, he found it hard to distinguish between our students and his graduates and would be happy to employ any one of them! Very well done to our Sixth Form Students,

Shannon Alebon, Sarah Doyle, Pearse Duffy, Michael Kenny, Gaynor N'Cube, Katelyn NcHugh, James Norton, Tia Seymour, Greg Stanley and Jessica Torrence.

EXCELLENT PARENTS FORUM ON MONDAY EVENING
Thank you to those parents who attended the Parents Forum on Monday.  There was an update on the Multi Academy Companies (MAC), the Golden Jubilee and preparations for the Year 6 Parents' introductory evening on the 6 June.

OGWEN COTTAGE OUTDOOR PURSUITS 6 - 11 MAY 2013
It was a great pleasure to accompany 26 Year 9 students recently on the annual trip to Ogwen Cottage Outdoor Pursuits Centre in Snowdonia.  Students enjoyed a wonderful week taking part in several exciting activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, orienteering, mountain walking and sea level traversing.  In preparation for the trip students had to improve their fitness levels by taking part in regular workouts throughout the year.  Ogwen Cottage is a very special and unique place and the instructors take great pride in really challenging all students that attend the centre with demanding and thought provoking activities.  This year as always they did not disappoint and all our students were very complimentary about the staff and activities undertaken.  Ogwen Cottage is a week to remember!  Well done everyone, you can be proud of your achievements!  Thank you to Mrs Lisa Taylor who accompanied the students on the trip.  If you are presently in Year 8 it is time to start thinking about the Ogwen Cottage trip for next year.  If you are interested please see Mr Houston if you have any questions about the week.  Ogwen students of 2013 Pablo Allan, Shannon Andrews-Dalton, Sebastion Bober, Cameron Collier, Ryan Crozier, Andrew Davis, Carl Angelo Delacruz, William Dingley, Aidan Doherty, Alice Evans, Ethan Farrell, Thomas John Guerrero, George Harris, Gerard Henry, Patrick Hickey, Mathhew Holmes, James Kelly, Samuel McGinley, Naoibh McNamee, Kelly Meakin, Allan Muhenda, Mason O'Rourke, Matthew Pakes, Jourdan Snowe, Kareem Sudgier and Kieran Tierney.  Editor's Note - A huge thank you to Mr Houston and Mrs Taylor for making it possible.

LAST WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

Well done to Elias McDermott Year 7 (Romero House 5C) who correctly informed us that the next manager of Manchester United will be David Moyes.  Well done Elias who wins £10.

THIS WEEK'S QUIZ QUESTION

This week Aston Villa, much to their relief, discovered that they will be a Premiership Football Club next season.  Which three Premiership clubs have been relegated this season?   Email me on j.foley@stacs.bham.sch.uk and don't forget to tell me who you are.

Yours sincerely

JIM FOLEY
