First World War Armistice Centenary Commemoration

Armistice Centenary Commemoration Memorial

As you will know Remembrance Sunday this year marks the centenary of the Armistice which brought an end to the fighting in the First World War. Nearly 9.7 million men died including 1.1 million British and Commonwealth troops. We are marking this international event in a number of ways at St Thomas Aquinas School - more details next week - but to start with we would like to hear about your family story from the First World War. Did one of your relatives fight and survive the horror of the trenches? Did they experience a German air raid as a youngster or maybe they were a munitions worker helping to supply the men at the front? All stories are welcome and hopefully we will be able to record a range of Tommies’ tales for future Tommies students to learn about in the future.

Simply email your story to including your connection to our school. Many thanks and get writing!

We are in the process of planning and making a permanent commemorative memorial in school to mark the centenary of the Armistice which saw an end to the fighting in the First World War. To help with this all you have to do is cut the bottom off a 2 litre pop bottle to a depth of about 2cm (see 'How to make Bottle Poppies' video below) and bring it into school - feel free to do more than one! - and give them to Mr Gay or Reception. These will be turned into painted and turned into poppies which will frame the display. We plan to open the memorial on Friday 9th November as well as marking this international event with the playing of the Last Post to the whole school after line up.
