St Thomas Aquinas Feast Day - 28 January 2010 |

Mass
What a privilege it was to be part of the celebration of our Feast Day yesterday. We began in tutor groups with each pupil producing a prayer that was then presented in a procession at the beginning of Mass. Mrs Jones called on each member of the school community to be generous in allowing everyone else to pray and to reflect on the meaning of the day. And that is exactly what happened as we celebrated a wonderful Mass together. After communion Mrs Dee McCann from Acorns Hospice was delighted to receive a cheque for £4,636 which was 50% of the proceeds from our Autumn Raffle. Mrs McCann was able to share her experience in working with terminally ill children and their parents and the vital role that we play in supporting that wonderful work. Throughout the Mass a recurrent theme was prayer for the people of Haiti and in response to many requests from pupils we held a bucket collection after Mass to support CAFOD and the other organisations involved in providing relief. I am pleased to say we collected the fantastic sum of just over £1,000 which has now been forwarded to Haiti.
Well done to all the readers, choir and instrumentalists who took part in the Mass - a particular thank you to Naomi Dawes 8LSA who sang a solo during communion.
Awards Assembly
After break we then reassembled in the Sportshall for our special Awards Assembly in which we recognised a boy and girl from every form in the school chosen by their own tutor group as the best role models through the year. We were also royally entertained by a range of performers who were hugely appreciated by the enthusiastic audience. Well done to Nancy Davis, Sophie Field, Ciaran Clifford and Tom Davis and finally our famous dance troupe involving countless girls plus Imani Bahati, Josh Gannon and Aidan Davis. Well done everyone.
Finally a huge thank you to our Chair of Governors, Mr Laurence Docherty who was with us for both celebrations. Our governors do a huge amount of work for our school behind the scenes but rarely appear in public. It was good to have Mr Docherty, who has been Chair for many years, present with us and he was able to congratulate both the pupils and the staff for their hard work and many achievements.
