Physical Education

About the Faculty

The Physical Education faculty is a dynamic, creative and hard working team. The team prides itself on delivering high-quality physical education through the National Curriculum activity areas. We believe that physical experiences, access to knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes are necessary to promote long term participation in physical activity. Also provision should contain a balance of individual and group activities of both a cooperative and competitive nature that are appropriate to pupils’ needs and abilities.

We aim to provide challenges that allow pupils to develop physically, socially and intellectually. The development of confidence, tolerance andan appreciation of one's own and others' strengths and weaknesses are considered to be essential components of the learning process.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-8)

At Key Stage 3 all pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum and have the opportunity to participate in Games, Swimming, Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics, Badminton and Striking and Fielding activities.

Key Stage 4 (Years 9-11)

At Key Stage 4 pupils continue to develop their skills, techniques and understanding in a variety of activities.  We encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning and have the confidence to improve their standards of performance. As a GCSE option, pupils will follow the AQA Syllabus which comprises 1 practical and 1 theory lesson per week in addition to their core PE lessons.

Key Stage 5

Sixth form students have the opportunity to study AS and A2 Physical Education. Students have 5 lessons per week and study the following areas Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise and Physiology, Skill Acquisition, History of Sport, Contemporary Issues and Sports Psychology.

Extra Curricular

The department has recently been awarded Sports Mark for our excellent extra curricular programme. Pupils’ participation is high both during lessons and at the numerous after- school clubs. The extra-curricular timetable is extensive and embraces numerous sporting activities. In addition, we have a School Sport Co-ordinator who works very closely with our primary partnership schools and brings in outside coaches and allows us to offer traditional sports and beyond.

Junior Sports Leadership

In September 2008 we introduced the Junior Sports Leaders Award Level 1 to our GCSE students and the course is being offered to current year 12’s. This course is part of our extra curricular programme where pupils acquire the skills of organisation, communication and the ability to lead safe active sessions for children who are younger. Many students use this award as a stepping stone towards specific sporting qualifications.
