The House System

At St Thomas Aquinas we place great emphasis on our pastoral system. The role of the form tutor is vital and all students spend 20 minutes each day (apart from Wednesday) with their tutor.

There are eight houses each named after a prominent Catholic Patron - Bosco, Fisher, John Paul, Martin, More, Newman, Romero, Teresa. Each house is led by an experienced teacher as the Head of House and there are 5 tutor groups in each house.  There are approximately 22 students in a tutor group which will be a mixture of each year group in the school from 7 to 10.  Year 11, 12 and 13 are distinct year groups focusing on examination readiness, future pathways, university applications and careers, but they maintain house identity through having leadership responsibilities with the houses. Each house has its own distinctive colour and shield and a range of students with various responsibilities.  Competition between the houses is strong but friendly across a whole range of areas including attendance, punctuality, sports, charities and a host of other activities.

Great emphasis is placed on the care of students for each other and the importance of older students acting as role models.  The youngest students in Year 7 are placed carefully in the right tutor groups where they are welcomed warmly and where they can flourish each day.  Our Year 7 students consistently report how happy they are in school and how welcome they have been made to feel by everyone.
