Guernsey 2010

News image

A view from a Year 7 Guernsey camper It reads on the school powerpoint ‘The Trip of a Lifetime'. It isn't joking. The trip magically transforms teachers and students from strict class masters and Birmingham chavs to a family. Guernsey is the cleanest Island that I think you'll ever find in the world. There is pretty much no litter to be found anywhere on the tiny island. My favourite part of Guernsey was the campsite. Not because of my warm sleeping bag and tent that was there, but because of the atmosphere. The same atmosphere that had everyone smiling, ‘The Guernsey Spirit. It ... [Read more]

Sports Awards 2010

News image

There was a great atmosphere throughout the ceremony as we celebrated the countless achievements of our boys and girls over the past year. In addition to the outstanding performances of so many teams and individuals it was particularly pleasing that Mrs Yvonne Murphy, mother of Adele and longstanding Netball Coach was recognised as Coach of the Year. A big thank you to Mr Docherty, Chair of Governors, who presented the awards and to the P.E. Faculty for all their hard work. Following the presentations Mr Smyllie made the crucial announcement of the winning house from Sports Day 2010. The accolade went ... [Read more]

End of Year Mass 2010

News image

Today we gave thanks for our school year with our traditional end of Year Mass. The Mass, celebrated by Fr Stefan, assisted by Mr. Smith as Deacon, was a truly fitting way to end our year together, incorporating the reverence we have come to expect from our students and the memories of the year brought to mind by the PowerPoint at the end of the Mass.   After the Mass, students were able to thank the staff who are moving on to new jobs, Mrs Doyle, Mr Rowlands, Mr Williams and Miss Walsh, and to wish Ms High, Miss Arthurs and Mr ... Over 2 days this week pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 were given an opportunity to take part in a retreat as part of activities week. As part of the new House system, students went with their fellow House students and house tutors to 4 external venues to take part in games and activities to learn about their House patron. They were also given the opportunity to think about friendships and to help them to get to know other members of their new Houses. The day ended with a prayer service, giving everyone an opportunity to give thanks for new relationships. Thank ... [Read more]

Sports Day 2010

News image

It was our very first Sports Day under the house system and competition was fierce at the Hadley Stadium, Bearwood where we enjoyed fantastic weather and a great day. Eventually (and in top secret conditions) I can reveal that the 2010 Champions are Teresa House closely followed by Newman House and John Paul House. Congratulations to Head of Teresa House, Miss Stevens who is currently with the Guernsey Party and everyone involved. It was also terrific to hear of 8 new school records. Congratulations to: Year 7 - Savannah Sparrow (girls' triple jump); Year 8 boys - Craig Haines (shot ... [Read more]

Gaelic Football Tournament

News image

On Wednesday July 14, our under 14 Gaelic football team travelled to Pairc na hEireann to compete in the Catholic Secondary Schools Tournament. Hopes were high on the bus journey, however when we got there we started to feel a bit nervous. Our first game was against or rivals Bishop Challoner; emotions still ran high and we lost our first game. After a two game break, we composed ourselves and managed a confidence boosting victory against St Peter's. We went straight into our second game and won against Archbishop Ilsley RC School. Our confidence had grown and we were sure ... [Read more]

Year 12 Prayer Service, Sports Day and BBQ July 2010

News image

Year 12 celebrated their last day of term on the 9th of July with a prayer service and assembly in which they reflected on the past year. They said their goodbyes to 3 of their tutors who will not be joining them in Year 13, Mr Hindley, Mr Tinsley and Mr Chana. Afterwards, Year 12 forms competed against each other in their annual sports day. Whilst everyone took part with enthusiasm, it was 12 CHI who won the day! Finally, we shared a barbeque together before sending students on their summer holidays. A perfect end to a great year! We ... [Read more]

A Very Special Family Mass

News image

Last night we were celebrating our termly Family Mass but we were also giving thanks for the service to our school of two very special people. Mrs Nuala Jones and Mrs Irene Barclay as Deputy Head and Assistant Head respectively have made a huge contribution to our school so it was fitting that we came together as a community to thank them and God for everything they have done for St Thomas Aquinas School. We were delighted that our School Chaplain, Fr Stefan was joined by Fr Jan, Nuala's Parish Priest, in celebrating the Mass. J.Foley, ... [Read more]

Choir and Liturgy Group Trip to Hollywood Bowl

News image

Today our choir and liturgy group were treated to a lovely day out bowling, followed by a meal at Frankie and Bennie's.   This special trip was to reward them for all their hard work throughout the year. The choir and liturgy students have been fantastic this year, as they always are, delivering the music in all of our school and Parish Masses. They are an integral part of the spiritual life of St Thomas Aquinas School, and I am sure anybody that has seen them perform will agree just how special they are.   Thank you choir and liturgy group for all of ... Birmingham Catholic Partnership Public Speaking Event – The Winning Team!

News image

A great year of public speaking drew to a close on Thursday afternoon at the BCP Year 9 competition. Hosted by Bishop Walsh School, the speakers had to choose "The World's Greatest Invention". Whilst most of the other seven schools went down more traditional routes, our team's quirky take on 'bubblewrap' went down a storm, not least due to our representative's excellent, confident and comic delivery. Determined to turn our "second place" fortune around, the team were delighted to triumph with a perfect score and carry away the BCP Public Speaking shield!   Huge congratulations go to our proud winner, as the ... Year 6 Induction Day

News image

On Wednesday morning this week 210 Yr 6 students arrived at St Thomas Aquinas School for their induction day. Some looked nervous and apprehensive with others being excited and jovial. It was fantastic to see an array of primary school uniforms with all colours of the rainbow at the start of the day. Mr. Foley opened the assembly with his trusty words of wisdom and expectations for all the students. The simple message of ‘try your best' and ‘be the best person you can be' was remembered from our two induction evenings a week ago and the students certainly lived ... [Read more]

Year 10 Enterprise & IAG Days 2010

News image

Monday 5 July was Year 10 Enterprise Day. Students in Year 10 arrived at school dressed in ‘smart' business clothes and certainly impressed us with how great they looked. The aim of the day was to work as a team. Each team - 24 in all - formed a small company and created logos, business plans and business cards. Each business was a high-end fashion accessory manufacturer. The students then put together an outfit with accessories for their Catwalk model, who performed in the fashion show. Prizes were awarded for Best Business Plan, Most Profit and Best Catwalk. A great ... [Read more]

On Thursday July 1 forty four Aquinas students from years 7 through to year 12 travelled to Birmingham Town Hall to take part in the Birmingham Dance Showcase Finale. The Aquinas dancers joined 12 other Birmingham Primary, Special and Secondary schools for a truly wonderful celebration of dance. The Aquinas piece entitled 'Transform Ya', choreographed by Kerrey Clarke, was the largest group piece and was exceptionally well received by both the audience and visiting Arts Council and Dance UK representatives.   Mrs Yates would like to thank all the Aquinas staff who accompanied the group and would like to applaude both the ... It was an action packed day, with the Aquinas boys and girls teams both dominating the first event of Cross Country. The Aquinas team lead the way in the track and field events, with both the boys and girls qualifying for the finals. The final event of the day (the football and Korfball Tournament), gave the Aquinas pupils the chance to display their talents and they finished runners up.
