West Midlands County Football Semi Finalists !Congratulations go to the Year 11 Boys Football Team for a tremendous victory on Thursday 26th January when they beat Shire Oak School in the Under 16's West Midlands County Cup Quarter Final. In difficult playing conditions, both teams played extremely well. St Thomas Aquinas were 1-0 down at half time due to an own goal, but fought back bravely to win 2-1 with two excellent goals from Tory Herbert. As always, the team was ably led by their outstanding captain this season, Anthony Fletcher. Other notable performances were produced from Joe While, Michael Kenny and Jak Skerrett. Year 8 Gifted and Talented Visit to Birmingham UniversityOn Tuesday 17th January, I accompanied four of our Year 8 Gifted Students on a visit to Birmingham University. The students have been selected to be part of the Forward Thinking Programme - a scheme devised by the University of Birmingham and a group of local schools to raise awareness of the benefits of Higher Education. The students met students from the other schools participating in the project and completed some team-building exercises including building a tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows! They took part in a Scavenger Hunt around the university campus and got the chance to meet students ... [Read more] |
Newman House Mass - 17th January 2012On Tuesday morning Newman House celebrated Mass together and it was a wonderful and spiritual occasion which brought all form classes together with their form tutors and other members of our house and school community. The theme of the Mass was courage and it provided an opportunity for us to reflect and think about others. We were also reminded about how we should have the courage to do the right thing each and every day. Every student in Newman House made a commitment to believing in courage with not being afraid to sing and respond appropiately during the Mass. Throughout Mass ... [Read more] |

Christmas Mass 2011Our term finished today in the perfect way with our Christmas Mass. As with all our whole school Masses, our Sports Hall was transformed into a place of worship by the respect and prayerfulness shown by our students. The Christmas Mass is always a special celebration. The readings, prayers and carols enabled us to reflect on this major feast of the Church. We were delighted to be able to hand over a cheque for £3596 to a representative from Trident Reach, our chosen Autumn Raffle charity. Our school community also shared a wonderful moment at the end of Mass when Billie ... [Read more] |
Mini Sagas CompetitionFirst place - Montel GordonAs the sun hibernated behind the ugly grey clouds, a drunken man staggered across the ship. His eyes were as red as the gates of Hell. A cold shiver danced through my spine as a ghost ship passed. Their laugh struck fear inside his body. They came closer and closer. Second place - Gwyneth GriffithsFamous Nordic Goddess Inger proudly owned a powerful sword, making her army unbeatable. While she slept, evil Amazonian giants stole it. Vengeful, she travelled, disguised as an attractive man, marrying the leader Tia. Retrieving the sword, Inger joyfully held it aloft, returning it ... [Read more] |
Christmas Hampers 2011The real meaning of Christmas is never far from the minds of everyone in our school and the end of the autumn term is no exception. Families have been bringing in donations of food and other goods to tutor groups. Thanks to your generosity again this year we collected a total of over 135 hampers to distribute to parishes and local families who need an extra helping hand this Christmas. A fantastic result despite the difficult financial times everyone is facing. Thank you for your generous support of such a worthwhile appeal. Anne-Marie Tibbits Lay ... [Read more] |
Evening of Readings and Carols – 14 December 2011On Wednesday 14th of December, at 7.00pm, we gathered as a community in the Sports Hall for our annual evening of readings and carols, which is a lovely way to remind us of the true Christmas message. Over 90 students took part in the evening and they were involved in the choir, orchestra, reading, processions and lighting our Advent Wreath. It was also wonderful to have over 250 people in the congregation with many families in our community represented. The choir was superb and the selection of carols which included some old favourites and some new to us this year really captured ... [Read more] |
Year 13 Media and Communications visit to The BBC MailboxOn Wednesday 14th December, I accompanied three Year 13 Media & Communication students on a visit to the BBC Mailbox in the centre of Birmingham as part of their on-going studies into radio drama. The visit was not only thoroughly enjoyable but also provided the students with important evidence for their folders. The students sat (and looked quite at home!) on the famous Midlands Today settee and also tried their hands at presenting the news and weather! All in all a great success and a big thank you to Bekky, Iona and Joe: you are a credit to the school ... [Read more] |
More House Mass - 5th December 2011More House celebrated our House Mass on Monday morning. It was a moving, spiritual occasion which brought all members of the House together: students, tutors, support staff and More House's link governor - Mr David Holmes. As we are in the season of Advent, our Mass was in honour of Mary. The gospel was based on the Annunciation where Gabriel visited Mary and told her she would have the Son of God. Saying yes to Gabriel's announcement and God's call would not have been easy for Mary yet she responded to God's call without hesitation. The students and staff of More ... [Read more] |
Autumn Raffle – 1st December 2011A huge thank you to everyone! Once again our students and parents surpassed themselves in their generosity. Despite the financial climate in the country and Christmas approaching, our parents and children showed the real meaning of Christmas in a wonderful effort. Only having four weeks has seen a massive response from forms and different houses as always. An amazing effort, thank you. The house team spirit has been outstanding during the last four weeks with students doing their best, supported by parents and form tutors who constantly encouraged and praised - a really big thank you and well done to all ... Years 10 and 11 Aquinas Bench Ball Competition – 28th November 2011Our Autumn Term Sports House Competition for Years 10 and 11 took place on Monday 28th November where our students participated in our popular game of ‘Aquinas Bench Ball'. Every house was represented and the support for each year was outstanding. In each game there were some amazing feats of athleticism. We hope we have caught a flavour of these in the pictures displayed. Some of the defensive work on the day was some of the very best we have seen in any of the house competitions to date. The athletes competed at an excellent level and the results of many games ... [Read more] |
