Sports Team Photos - June 2013We recently have had the pleasure of taking some wonderful photos of our selected sports teams and representative individuals ranging from Year 7 to 12 this year. This included our school, district, county, regional and Great British athletes. As you can see we have a lot of very talented people at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School and we are very proud of their achievements in the sporting arena. It is only when you see all the teams and individuals together that you realise how much commitment Aquinas students put into sport inside and outside of school every year. It is amazing ... Good Shepherd Mass - 11 June 2013On Tuesday 11 June I accompanied Mr Smith and 37 students in Year 7 and 8 to St Chad's Cathedral to attend one of the annual Good Shepherd Masses for Father Hudson's Society. The Mass is a celebration and a thank you to the schools in the area that have raised money for the Society, particularly through their Lenten ‘Good Shepherd Appeal'. The cathedral was full with young people representing Catholic schools in Birmingham.   During the Offertory Procession representatives from all the schools carry banners and their cheques to offer them to Bishop Pargeter, who was celebrating the Mass. We ... [Read more] |
Year 5 Visits to St Thomas AquinasOn Monday and Tuesday we welcomed all the Year 5 children from St Columba's, St Paul's and Our Lady and St Rose to experience what life was like at St Thomas Aquinas School. In the first two sessions the children had the opportunity to learn how to bake bread with Mrs McGinley. The children then moved on to Textiles with Mrs Bayliss where they designed and coloured their name, which was transferred onto their very own St Thomas Aquinas bag. In the next two sessions, the children had the opportunity to use the fitness room with Mr Smyllie and to see how many step-ups they could do within ... Year 6 Parents Forum - 10 June 2013On Monday evening we held our first evening for the parents and family members of the Year 6 children who will be joining us in September. The sports hall was packed out with over 200 parents as well as many staff and students from St Thomas Aquinas.  The first part of the evening was a presentation led by Anne Vile, the Chair of the Parents Forum, who shared her experiences and feelings as a parent when her sons moved from primary school to secondary. She also highlighted the importance of parent and school relationships and the opportunities that are available for parents through the Parents Forum at St Thomas ... Our Lady of Lourdes Primary Visit – Romero House - 10 June 2013On Monday 10 June 2013, members of Romero House were invited to Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School to talk to Year 6 pupils about our patron whom they had chosen to be their patron for the school's mission week. Students from Aquinas gave a presentation on how Archbishop Romero has inspired them in their everyday life at school. They talked about how they have developed their faith by following Oscar Romero's words, ‘Aspire not to have more, but to be more'. The Year 6 children were very receptive in their answers and produced some amazing Romero crosses and some ... [Read more] |
Year 11 Mass and Evening of Celebration - 6 June 2013Last night we gathered in the Sports Hall for one of the special evenings of the year. We began it in the perfect way with a Mass celebrated by Fr Jan thanking God for his many blessings and for the gift of each and every member of Year 11. And in the second half we moved to a different mode with lots of entertainment, many memories, much laughter and a few tears. Thank you to some exceptionally talented students in John Tibbits, Bobbi-Ann Taylor, Hana Linehan, Nancy Davis, Daniel Jackson, Caleb Clements and Aidan Davis. And some wonderful memories - ... Year 7 Cricket Report - 5 June 2013It was a glorious summers evening as the Year 7 team took to the field against Bishop Challenor, with some playing their first ever Cricket game. However they didn't show any signs of immaturity with the bat as they went about posting a large total of 47 off 12 overs with Ciaran Healey and Mathew Higgins playing a meritorious innings, both scoring 15 each with the bat for an invaluable partnership putting Bishop Challenor on the back foot. Â With the fading light and onset of reverse swing remaining a factor, STACS took to the field looking to defend their commendable total. ... [Read more] |
Oxford Trip - 5 June 2013On Wednesday 5 June, we went to Oxford with several other schools. It was a very enjoyable experience, as we had the opportunity to learn about the lives of people who attend Oxford University. The day started with a lecture about Oxford and what it could offer us. This was followed by a tour of Keble College, which is part of the University as a whole. We were taken into part of the University where a scene from Harry Potter was filmed (now a tourist highlight). After lunch we had another small lecture from 4 current students about what courses ... Lourdes Trip - May 2013During half-term staff and students from St Thomas Aquinas School joined the annual Birmingham Diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes. The theme of this year's pilgrimage was ‘Lourdes, a doorway of faith' and we were able to share our gift of faith with ill and disabled pilgrims by volunteering at the Accueil (hospital). It was a humbling experience made even more special by three wonderful students - Katie Boot, Scarlett Darby and Hayley Hunter, who fully committed themselves so readily throughout the week to the service of others. The care and kindness they showed did not go unnoticed and all three girls are ... [Read more] |
Year 13 Leavers Mass – 24 May 2013On Friday 24 May, Year 13 celebrated their final Mass together. It was a lovely, reflective occasion with students leading the singing and readings. The opening procession reflected their seven years at St Thomas Aquinas, with photo montage of the students throughout their time here. The year group remembered all staff and students who shared their time at Aquinas, especially Billie-Jayne Fulford.  Year 13 then passed on a candle - The Light of Faith - to the current year 7s represented by Matthew Higgins and Apple Kwok . Year 7 responded with a beautifully sung blessing "May your life in this ... [Read more] |

Visit to John Bartlett - 21 May 2013On Tuesday 21 May, I visited the second Headteacher of St Thomas Aquinas School, Mr John Bartlett. John and his wife Elaine welcomed me into their home to talk about the school and Jubilee Celebrations. John spoke warmly of his thirty years at the school, having been a part of the school from the very first day back in 1963. He spoke about his great friend and the school's first Headteacher Paul Olsen and numerous staff and students, recalling many fond memories throughout his three decades at St Thomas Aquinas. John is very much hoping to be part of the Jubilee Celebrations ... [Read more] |
Blessing of Hands Mass - 19 May 2013Last Sunday students and staff from St Thomas Aquinas School joined hundreds of other volunteers at a packed St Chad's Cathedral in preparation for the 2013 Lourdes Pilgrimage. The Mass was a wonderful opportunity to meet other pilgrims and to receive a blessing of the hands. It was very fitting that the Blessing of Hands Mass fell on the feast of Pentecost, celebrating the Holy Spirit still alive in the Church today, and this Saturday Katie Boot, Scarlett Darby, Hayley Hunter, Mrs Devlin, Mr Foley, Mrs Ryan, Mr Smyllie and I will be departing to Lourdes. Full report when we return. Mr ... [Read more] |

Visit to Paul Olsen – 14 May 2013On Tuesday 14 May, I had the privilege of visiting the first Headteacher of St Thomas Aquinas School, Mr Paul Olsen, at his home in Burnham-on-Sea. On arrival I was warmly welcomed by Paul and his wife Mary at their beautiful house on the seafront at Burnham. The day coincided with Paul's ninetieth birthday; he was in great spirits and was delighted with the card and colourful flower pots I presented to him on behalf of the school. Paul spoke affectionately about Aquinas from the beginning of the building of the school to the numerous students and their successes, the staff and ... [Read more] |
