Good Shepherd Mass - 17th May 2012

News image

On Thursday 17th May I accompanied Mr Smith and 26 students in Year 7 - 10 to St Chad's Cathedral to attend one of the annual Good Shepherd Masses for Father Hudson's Society. The Mass is a celebration and a thank you to the schools in the area that have raised money for the Society, particularly through their Lenten Good Shepherd Appeal, and the cathedral was packed with young people from all over Birmingham. For the first time this year it was our privilege to be asked to do the music for the Mass, with Mr Smith ably leading us. ... [Read more]

Ogwen Cottage Outdoor Pursuits Residential 6th – 11th May 2012

News image

34 year 9 students recently travelled to Snowdonia to the Ogwen Cottage Outdoor Pursuits Centre where they enjoyed a wonderful week taking part in several exciting activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, mountain walking and sea level traversing. The students had to prepare for the trip by improving their fitness levels over several months in the lead up to the trip. Our students responded so well to the challenges throughout the week. The instructors were very complimentary, not only of our students on this trip but also of St Thomas Aquinas School generally when it comes to our students' ... [Read more]

Birmingham Catholic Partnership Storytelling Project - 9th May 2012

News image

Over the course of the last week, fifteen year eight students have been involved in the Birmingham Catholic Partnership Storytelling Project. This was a project, funded by the Irish in Birmingham, which involved five other Catholic schools alongside St. Thomas Aquinas. It involved a storyteller, Clare Murphy (www.claremurphy.org) going into each school and working with a group of students to develop their storytelling skills. The second session was a celebratory event where the schools came together to showcase the work that they had been doing and the Irish myths that they had been working on. A huge thank you must go to ... [Read more]

Bosco House Mass - 8th May 2012

News image

Following the long weekend Bosco House gathered in the hall for their House Mass on the theme " a heart for justice". A big thank you to Father Stefan and to everyone who took part in a lovely, reflective celebration. After communion there was a moving video showing the oppression that takes place in our world and the challenge to each of us as Christians to speak up against it. At the end I was delighted to compliment the house on all their work and especially their charity to those in need. Just the week before Bosco handed over cheques ... [Read more]

Duke of Edinburgh Silver Practice Expedition

News image

Twenty brave Year 11 students set out on Friday afternoon on their first Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition. They faced three days of walking over the hills of south Shropshiretotalling a distance of 40km.The weatherwas obviously a concern and all students were prepared to face the elements. As it turned out, Mother Nature was kind and the rain held off and we even had sunshine on the Sunday. The students completed a short 5 km walk on the Friday to acclimatise themselves to the conditions and then camped at Chapel Lawn Farm, south of Clun. The walk on Saturday began ... [Read more]

Alton Castle Reports - April 2012

News image

On Wednesday 25th April Year 8 went to Alton Castle. It was a great fun-filled experience in which my faith was able to grow stronger. Not only was my faith able to develop, so was my friendship with others from the group I worked in. It was a great chance to talk to new people. Going to Alton Castle allowed me to see that God is in everything. The meditations we did allowed me to reflect on the activity we took part in. Prayer time happened in the morning, during the activities, before and after meals and night time. The prayers ... [Read more]

Help Harry Help Others Assembly - 3rd May 2012

News image

Yesterday Bosco House had an assembly which celebrated all our hard work and efforts in raising money for our selected charity ‘Help Harry Help Others' for this year's Lenten Charities project. In assembly we met the mother of Harry who spoke about Harry and what an amazing role model and influence he was to everyone he met and knew. She told us about how the money we raised is going to really make a difference to many people living and suffering with brain tumours. During the assembly Georgina presented a very touching presentation which Harry used to talk to thousands of ... [Read more]

MFL Primary Event - Wednesday 2nd May 2012

News image

On Wednesday 2nd May we welcomed children from four of our feeder primary schools to St Thomas Aquinas School for a French role-play competition. The Drama Studio was transformed into a French café scene and each group had 5 minutes to perform their play. One customer found a snail in her coffee and another was sent away in an ambulance after an allergic reaction to the pepper in her meal! It was clear that the children and their teachers had put a lot of effort and imagination into writing the scripts and practising their parts. Miss Radinez and I had ... [Read more]

The Great Kindle Relay Project - 27th April 2012

News image

Over the last two weeks a number of Year 7 students have been taking part in a project called The Kindle Relay Project. The students spent the first lesson working with a member of staff from the Central Library, developing their own ideas using a range of different stimuli including story cubes. With the arrival of Simon Cheshire, author of the Saxby Smart series of novels, the students worked collaboratively to create Chapter 3 of the Relay novel, which develops the ideas of Kings Norton Girls' School who wrote Chapter one, and of Turves Green Girls' School who created the second chapter. Once ... [Read more]

Year 10 Boys City of Birmingham League Cup Basketball Champions! - 26th April 2012

News image

The Year 10 boys' basketball team rounded off their season in impressive style on Thursday, beating Kings Norton in the much anticipated City of Birmingham League Cup Final. It was a cagey affair to begin with as Kings Norton probed the defence of STACS, finding baskets hard to come by, being forced to shoot from further out on many occasions. Impressive forward play from STACS, particularly from Rusarn Peters who scored 30 points and Jake Steenson showing quality in all areas of the court, was enough to edge the score in favour of STACS as the third period came t... Year 11 Boys City of Birmingham League Cup Basketball Champions! - 25th April 2012

News image

More silverware for STACS as they impressively saw off St John Wall School to win the illustrious Year 11 City of Birmingham league cup final in a thrilling encounter on Wednesday afternoon in the heart of Nechells. STACS took an impressive half time lead thanks to top work from Rusarn Peters (once again) and Ken Azuro, striking a partnership that would put fear into the heart of any defence out there! The fourth period proved too much for St John Wall School as high levels of fitness and accurate shooting saw off the opposition in comfortable style, adding more silverware ... [Read more]

CAFOD Campaign Inspires STACS Student

News image

John Tibbits, one of St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School's Young leaders was moved and inspired by the plight of people in the poorest countries living without water to write his own song.   The Young Leaders led assemblies throughout the school to raise awareness and support of CAFOD campaign 'Thirst for change'. The campaign is aiming to turn the tide on water poverty, calling on David Cameron to lead the world in demanding clean water and safe sanitation for all people in the world.   At the end of the assemblies students were encouraged to complete a form to David Cameron to get his ... Gifted and Talented Day - 19th April 2012

News image

Thursday 19th April turned out to be a very exciting day for some of our Year 9 students with the second recording of the STACS radio show. Russell Prue arrived early and set up his equipment so that part of the Sports Hall was turned in to a recording studio with 33 students from Year 9 becoming "radio presenters" and 6 talented Year 10 students on hand for extra support. Russell Prue from Anderton Tiger Radio started the day informally with students choosing their own groups and then choosing roles for each member of the group. Each was given a ... [Read more]

Paris Trip 2012

News image

The first full day in Paris took us on an early visit to the Eiffel Tower. Seeing it loom over the Paris skyline as we neared was a marvel for every Paris trip beginner as it was still impressive for the returning campaigner. We travelled alongside the Seine passing the impressive Notre Dame Cathedral on the way. As we approached ‘Pilier Est', the grandeur and scale became apparent. The journey up allowed us our first opportunity to glimpse the Paris landscape and upon our arrival on the second level it became clear why this is such a popular tourist attraction. With ... Easter Mass - 29th March 2012

News image

The Easter Mass is always a special occasion in our school and celebrating Mass on Thursday morning, nearly at the end of a very busy term, was particularly so. There is something very reverent and respectful about our celebrations to mark this great feast of the church. In today's Mass, through the help of readings, music, images and video, we journeyed to the foot of the cross. In doing so, we recognised the ways in which, through our lives, our denial of Christ or our denial of our faith, we crucify our Lord. All of us were invited to share in ... [Read more]
